@dantheclamman I recently saw a bird ID forum stymied by a bird with what looked like rare aberrant coloration. It turned out to be a result of AI upscaling—in the original photo it clearly just had pollen on its face.

Anecdotally, there was once a time when I was really impressed with people's close-up cell phone photos (of bugs), but I've noticed they're generally shit now.

@nev @dantheclamman the iDevices have a weird thing where they take a bunch of photos and somehow "average" them? you have to scroll through the settings to choose to have it just take one and save as a standard file format that can be used in places like fedi (learned that the hard way, though I don't think the averaging did anything too strange before I caught the issue)

@dantheclamman Samsungs camera app "touched up" my picture without my asking, since then, I've been using Open Camera, it doesn't have AI, though some may find all the manual adjustment options a bit overwhelming.

@Thatonepersonwithaface yes, my previous Samsung was an s24 ultra and I noticed weird artifacting at times even before the AI stuff started being introduced, particularly on birds at a high digital zoom. Like textures of the environment and the bird would start to bleed into eachother. I think it was doing the multi frame thing where it takes a bunch of shots and tries to integrate them. When we're talking about a rapidly moving subject with a small number of pixels in frame, the blending starts to break down https://r2.community.samsung.com/t5/CamCyclopedia/Multi-frame-Processing-Technology/ba-p/13150941

@Thatonepersonwithaface @dantheclamman Yeah, I also use OpenCamera. The UI is clunky but it's well documented on the site, and hey, it gets the job done with no funny business.

Samsungs photo/video tool supports some resolutions/framerates that opencamera doesn't - I don't think those modes are entirely faked by AI, it seems like Samsung doesn't expose all camera features over the standard Android camera APIs

        (I don't think I'll buy Samsung again)

I have to pay increasing attention to what my phone does to pictures it takes. For example, my new Motorola phone includes a super zoom feature that actually uses generative AI to fill in details as it crops in! I turned it off, but others might not notice and upload such digitally created images to iNaturalist, where they'd actually impact scientific research

I use a Nikon D5200. Way too old for AI crap. I might adjust contast in GIMP, but I cannot create detail that doesn't exist.

@dantheclamman I vaguely remember photography debates around heavily edited pictures in photoshop and when they would stop being photographs and become artwork. Now that kind of editing has become part of the photographer's moment since that's how it comes out of the "camera" and there's no subsequent step and software involved. What you get is what it is, and it's all posing as photography.

@dantheclamman my phone (Google pixel) just notified me of a feature that would allow me to "enhance" my photos 🤮

Luckily for you, if your device isn't carrier locked, you can switch your operating system.

@dantheclamman I have words for the product manager. None of them kind.
