We're obsessed with the idea that poor people might take more than they need,

but we never question why rich people are never satisfied with what they already have.

@WeirdWriter Now that there, is some hard facts! I can't stand it when someone says the poor eat better than me, when that 1 good lunch might be just 1 from much bad, just like the money they get from those that give.

Right? Or when people yell at poor people for having iPhones and stuff. 😞 or, heaven bid, eating *more* food! You can say that again @GoemonIshikawa

@WeirdWriter The social rule is to look up to the rich for they represent what you should want, a lot of myths behind why but the goal is to be them. The poor meanwhile aren't trusted because being poor is a personal failing, there's also fear because the poor aren't treated well and that fear keeps people away from becoming them.

After everything though, it's the rich constantly kicking down and those below kicking down too all at the request of the rich telling them not to punch up.

@WeirdWriter ..or why we don’t have wealth caps? Yet I know the answer. In a capitalist system many citizens think in simplistic terms, work hard, get rich, so they admire rich, want to be like them. Yet seem slow to question manipulation of the system that magnifies the wealth of those already wealthy and disenfranchises a great many citizens, deterioration of infrastructure and the social support net, a distinct loss of quality of life for the majority as wealth is vacuumed.

@WeirdWriter One of my mother's totally sane comments on UBI was that "The government legalized pot so that people would get addicted and do nothing but watch Netflix all day."

In the last (incomplete) study of UBI in Canada, 83% of people in the trial did work that was not just *constructive* -- like working part time, returning to school, or starting a small business -- they often did things that were a *huge benefit to society*, like volunteering and caring for family / children / elders.

I don't care if some small percentage of people get high and watch Netflix if UBI helps the overwhelming majority of people live better lives.

I don't have links on me at the moment but I've seen *multiple* studies that basically say the same thing. People are not as lazy as others like to pretend they are. I have a Black MAGA friend, likes me a billion times more than I like him, and he constantly says that shit too, that if given the chance, people will choose to be lazy so we need to make sure people stop living off the GOV. *sigh* @JustinDerrick

@WeirdWriter i suspect it's not that the rich don't have enough, but it's that others still have something, and that's not acceptable as they don't wield ultimate power when there's still a way to survive without them.

@WeirdWriter I'm ok with that "welfare queen" (ugh) having lobster dinner every night of the fucking week, but not so much OK with Jeff Bezos having a yacht that comes with a yacht and destroying the planet in the process.

                  Priorities, people.

@WeirdWriter @JustinDerrick My favorite question is always: So would *you* stop to work, when offered UBI? And I've never gotten a Yes. It's always _those other people_ they are worried about. Yeah, right.

@JustinDerrick @WeirdWriter When I’m out and I come across a panhandler, I always hand out some cash. Had someone tell me that I was wasting my money and they would just drink/smoke/shoot up with it, and I say that’s fine if they do that, but they also might buy some condoms if they do sex work, get a bite to eat if they were hungry, or something else they need. My acquaintance just couldn’t understand

There is an epidemic of ‘incomplete’ UBI and related studies, because allowing them to run to completion would make the results even more damning to the status quo.

I've also heard folk (especially during the more hedonistic times of the 90s/00s) say "WTF does it even matter if they might go and buy drugs or booze, I would have done that myself anyway.."

@vfrmedia @JustinDerrick @WeirdWriter Hell, the only reason I didn’t was that I had regular and spot drug testing due to my job

@WeirdWriter @JustinDerrick My favorite question is always: So would *you* stop to work, when offered UBI? And I've never gotten a Yes. It's always _those other people_ they are worried about. Yeah, right.

I agree that's it's always *those other people* they're worried about.

Also, yes, I would most definitely stop working if UBI existed and met my needs. I don't want to work on unnecessary look-updates, I don't want to go to meetings about the analytics from poorly-designed AB tests. I don't want to sit in traffic, and I miss the days when I could work outside my house and come home to be home.
