but we never question why rich people are never satisfied with what they already have.
@WeirdWriter@caneandable.social They got rich by taking more than they need.

I don't have links on me at the moment but I've seen *multiple* studies that basically say the same thing. People are not as lazy as others like to pretend they are. I have a Black MAGA friend, likes me a billion times more than I like him, and he constantly says that shit too, that if given the chance, people will choose to be lazy so we need to make sure people stop living off the GOV. *sigh* @JustinDerrick
@WeirdWriter @JustinDerrick My favorite question is always: So would *you* stop to work, when offered UBI? And I've never gotten a Yes. It's always _those other people_ they are worried about. Yeah, right.

@WeirdWriter One of my mother's totally sane comments on UBI was that "The government legalized pot so that people would get addicted and do nothing but watch Netflix all day."
In the last (incomplete) study of UBI in Canada, 83% of people in the trial did work that was not just *constructive* -- like working part time, returning to school, or starting a small business -- they often did things that were a *huge benefit to society*, like volunteering and caring for family / children / elders.
I don't care if some small percentage of people get high and watch Netflix if UBI helps the overwhelming majority of people live better lives.

@JustinDerrick @WeirdWriter When I’m out and I come across a panhandler, I always hand out some cash. Had someone tell me that I was wasting my money and they would just drink/smoke/shoot up with it, and I say that’s fine if they do that, but they also might buy some condoms if they do sex work, get a bite to eat if they were hungry, or something else they need. My acquaintance just couldn’t understand

I've also heard folk (especially during the more hedonistic times of the 90s/00s) say "WTF does it even matter if they might go and buy drugs or booze, I would have done that myself anyway.."

There is an epidemic of ‘incomplete’ UBI and related studies, because allowing them to run to completion would make the results even more damning to the status quo.

The people who complain about that never seem particularly concerned that the rich spend money on drugs and consume them in their fancy-pants mansions.

the rich have places like that to hide behind and other than some celebs (and even they are being more quiet about that) few brag about taking drugs even if they do them..

@vfrmedia @JustinDerrick @WeirdWriter Hell, the only reason I didn’t was that I had regular and spot drug testing due to my job

#UBII agree that's it's always *those other people* they're worried about.
Also, yes, I would most definitely stop working if UBI existed and met my needs. I don't want to work on unnecessary look-updates, I don't want to go to meetings about the analytics from poorly-designed AB tests. I don't want to sit in traffic, and I miss the days when I could work outside my house and come home to be home.

And yet he isn't now - so not even using his power to try and push back against prohibition, it seems so many others have caved in to the demands of puritanism, and the same is happening this side of the pond - there was once a time when Labour discussed decrim, now they constantly attack the Green Party for being "soft on drugs".
I also know a fuckton of former users (especially 40-50 somethings who used to be ravers who now support prohibition and vote for Reform (who also went from libertarian views on drugs to hardline prohibitionists)

@JustinDerrick @WeirdWriter I don't care if a LOT of people just get high and watch Netflix from UBI and there are no other impacts. That's an ok outcome actually.

@WeirdWriter The social rule is to look up to the rich for they represent what you should want, a lot of myths behind why but the goal is to be them. The poor meanwhile aren't trusted because being poor is a personal failing, there's also fear because the poor aren't treated well and that fear keeps people away from becoming them.
After everything though, it's the rich constantly kicking down and those below kicking down too all at the request of the rich telling them not to punch up.
Calvinism is a helluva drug

I've sometimes had leftovers in my hand and offered them when people were panhandling and they were gratefully accepted. People aren't out begging because they like it, they're starving ffs.

@darwinwoodka @JustinDerrick @WeirdWriter I like how it’s often times cheaper to give the unhoused a place to live and food to eat as compared to the societal costs of emergency services and such, but we can’t do that “because they’re getting something for nothing”. Same attitude towards UBI

@FurryBeta @JustinDerrick @WeirdWriter
Often? No, it's ALWAYS cheaper. We spend what we do on cops and prisons BECAUSE we don't have UBI or secure housing and food.
