@baldur Krita is fantastic. I use it regularly for illustration, and I'll probably start using it more than that other software for image correction since Krita's nondestructive filter layers and masks give you a lot of flexibility.

(And then we immediately got uproar from the other side of itt: https://lemmy.world/post/46080825)
I think it will happen, but it's an involved process with a lot of things to watch for (like something taking over GIMP.org and using it for malware).

I found GnuImp so unintuitive and clunky, and it's ugly too. Krita is a dream to use and it does everything and it looks great. No contest.

@baldur Gosh, my non-computer savvy wife, who I introduced to GIMP at least a decade ago, was explaining to me proudly just yesterday how she manipulated images to produce facsimiles of those on fabric that she then added to her art. I, on the other hand, not being particularly graphic editor-minded, do find its UI non-intuitive.
And as one who has limped for decades from a bad knee, getting worse with age,I always thought the name gave those of us with disabilities a bit more visibility.

@baldur I believe it already has - we have some active design volunteers who have really contributed to implementing better UX going forward and pointing out existing improvements.
There's some "bigger" design work going on too which we hope to implement as it is finalized, but a lot of papercut UX issues (and larger) are being corrected already.

@clayote That was in response to the social media storm I linked (200+ posts!) - it's a proof-of-concept right now and we didn't want people to get worked up about a particular name being selected.

@baldur my wife is a painter and a graphic designer, and she swears by krita.

@baldur not a week go by without me saying “well yes, it has the look and feel of open source, but…”.

@baldur the one thing that, i've been told, somehow reduces the gnu image manipulation program's usage pains is applying the photoshop-compatible keyboard shortcut scheme.
but that's basically only an option for people who already know photoshop by rote and can go by without looking for knobs and buttons in the ui.

Krita is wonderful to use. I haven't used it too much, but it's now my go-to recommemdation for folks who want to try out digital art.
I remember trying GIMP back in college and it really sucked for me in particular, so I settled on something called FireAlpaca, which worked way better for me. Krita is better than FireAlpaca. I'd definitely recommend trying it.
