    We are definitely on.

Have already seen that it's not going to be a translation as such, which is fine (and exactly why I wanted to ask Proper Human People).

It is definitely the sense and usage of FFS I'm after.

So... whatever you mutter under your breath when you see the news headlines in the morning, that's what works.

But if you can give me a literal translation too that would be ace - already a couple of interesting ones in the thread 😁

@eclectech In Dutch, and currently living in The Hague, I would say something like "Krijg nou de tering!", or in local dialect spelling: "Krèg nâh de tering!".

We Dutch love to curse in disease-related terms, this would wish TB on something/someone, but in a general meaning, it would be closest to FFS.

@kym @eclectech i think for fuck's sake is a bit more semantically different than какого хера, because the latter is more of a "what the fuck" type of exclamation, i.e. amazement or shock, meanwhile ffs is more "i am so done with this"

@eclectech I think there might be no German equivalent, all I can think of is actually just "what the fuck/hell/...". So I tried to come up with a direct translation, and I think "um Fickeswillen" is a good thing to say in a dismayed way. Although "fickhalber" or "fickeswegen" sound fun too, but they're more practical words, more of a literal "I did this for the sake of fuck".

@eclectech In french I'd translate as "bordel de merde" (lit. "shit brothel"), or just "bordel" for short.

OK, lets give this a shot. Basically with my linguistics skills I will be able to do ONE more. That would be quite a short series. To make it longer a fedi collaboration will be required 😁

If you fancy helping please let me know how to write "for fuck's sake" in your language (native, or one you're pretty fluent in - no literal translations from machines please).

Of course the big question is whether it's used elsewhere?

It *might* be a very short series 😆

As a Welsh learner, I grapple with mutations (where the spelling of a word varies depending on grammatical factors).

Of all the letters in the Welsh alphabet, the only ones not involved in mutation at any point are FF and S, which always amuses me, as FFS is what I often think while trying to learn mutations.

I can never decide whether Welsh changing the spelling of words base on the previous / next one is more or less confusing than English’s choice to change the pronunciation but not the spelling (e.g. the apple, the pair).
