1. Log in on your server's website or web app
2. Go to the profile page of the account you want to follow more closely
3. Click the

p.s. Just to be clear, on the Fediverse you will see all the posts from all the accounts you follow. Nothing is hidden.
The idea of the notification feature is to make extra sure you notice a particular account's posts, in case you accidentally scrolled past them in your timeline.

@FediTips I'd love this option for hashtags. Is there any way to do that in the desktop version?

I believe, but please correct me if I'm wrong, one is notified of orignal posts the user posts themselves, but not content they boost, nor any repiles they make to other posts? -

There isn't a hashtag notification system, sorry. You can follow hashtags so they show up in your timeline, but there's no separate notification of this.

@FediTips Only just now have i realised that the account mimicking your handle & emoji, but which posts masses of insane crap, is not yours [is on different server]. Feeling silly at my hitherto dimness. Next time it appears in my timeline i shall block it. Fwiw.

You might want to report them as well, you're not the first person to get confused
I don't care if people make fun of me, but it is kind of frustrating that people just looking for advice are seeing the wrong account.
