I got followers almost entirely through A, by just posting regularly with stuff I thought followers would find useful, and responding to people's replies and messages.

It took a few years but it didn't require any kind of hype or cross-promotion or anything like that. It was just being on here and talking to other people on here.

Also occasionally boost useful posts by other people that are relevant to my followers, but I'd also count that as interacting with people on here.

Yeah, I'd kind of agree. If you are thinking about follower numbers, that makes it harder to engage with people in an authentic way.

This is very much a grassroots social network mainly run by volunteers, so "clout chasing" isn't really a thing here. It's more like chatting to your neighbours, people don't think about each other's follower numbers.
