Do you want to make sure you notice posts by certain accounts?
If you're using Mastodon, go to the account's profile page and click on the
bell icon. When this is activated, you will be additionally notified every time that account posts anything. Their posts will appear in your timeline as normal, the bell just adds an additional notification in your "Notifications" section too.

@FediTips now that we have this, when can we expect twice the number of letters/spaces?

Thanks for all you do!

Do you mean longer posts?
You can already get those if you move to a server with higher limits, mastodon.social is stingy about its character limits.
There's a hand-picked list of some well-run servers with higher character limits here: https://fedi.garden/tag/larger-post-size (the size limits are noted in each entry)

@FediTips Does the bell icon say anything? This doesn't really make sense for those of us who use screen readers, and I know that was not your intention.

@FediTips thanks for the info. I'm not sure I know how to do any switches, but I'll share this info for others. (just an old lady in the Rust Belt, zero computer skills, even fewer internetal skills

I think it has the alt text "Notify me when (account) posts". This option is only on accounts you already follow by the way, so you should be able to discover examples by browsing your following list.

@FediTips Thank you. That definitely helps.

Thanks for flagging this, I've added the alt text to the instructions on the website at https://fedi.tips/how-to-be-notified-when-someone-posts-on-mastodon
I'll try to phrase the posts a bit differently in future to make this clear.

Okay, fair enough!
Another approach might be to reply to your own posts to create a longer thread? More info about this at https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-post-a-thread-on-mastodon

@FediTips Yes I've been doing that.

@FediTips Yes I've been doing that.
Okay, and others have already suggested apps that do it automatically, so I guess that covers that topic.
For what it's worth, if you ever need or want to move your account there's a step-by-step non-techy guide at https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server
It does have quite a lot of steps in the process, but each step is hopefully straightforward.

The thing we really need is for the mastodon server code to move the post character limit from being hard coded to being a value from a config file.
Today, to increase post length, admins need to branch the code in order to make a (trivial) change. But, the code is still branched.
Which means each upgrade requires modifying the code again.
I totally understand why admins don't want to do this: slows down applying security patches and upgrades. -

From the discussions on Github about this topic, it seems the developers of Mastodon are keen on the limit remaining 500 characters and don't want to make it easier to change.
However the Glitch Mastodon and Hometown Mastodon forks have taken a different approach and let their admins set the character limit themselves.
