    @david42 @anneroth @cavallette

    Who cares if domain names overlap?

    A/I could have just asked people to enter their server's ipv6 address into their hosts file. And if you're going to do that, they could have self-hosted their own servers. It's not that expensive. Or that hard.

    As word got out, more people could do it. Then people could have posted clickable links to the ipv6 address all over the place - no need for everyone to edit their own hosts file.

    I was doing this 30 years ago so I could stream my music collection at the office over a crappy 1 mbps cable modem link - multiple connections worked fine.

    @barbra @anneroth @cavallette I care as a user and as a server host if example.example resolves to different and uncoordinated DNS records, managed by uncoordinated people, on distinct global roots. It also complicates name certificates. You really don't want the people who own example.example on the ICAAN system and those who own it on the hypothetical EU global root to be able to impersonate each other's hosts.

      @barbra @david42 @anneroth @cavallette

      you've moved the problem to IANA instead of ICANN

      how to get so many ipv6 addresses? who controls that, its still a bullshit central authority.

      @Li @barbra @anneroth @cavallette honestly people could randomly generate IPv6 addresses all day and not collide with each other. They are the same size as UUIDs. They do not need assignment for honest users to avoid collisions. They only need assignment to prevent impersonation attacks.

        @Li @david42 @anneroth @cavallette

        Every time your modem connects to an isp, your isp assigns your modem an ipv6 address from its allottment. The modem will reconnect after a power failure or reboot, so you might not get the same address again.

        Not really a problem if you also have a server at a hosting facility, since you can host a link there, and update it when your local ip changes, same as a dynamic dns service.

        These are solved problems, have been for decades.

        No need to involve either IANA or ICANN. You're operating independent of both of them.

        I'm really surprised that nobody connected with the affected organisation didn't try this. They had a whole month.

        My guess is they don't have any old farts who were doing these things to host web servers from home way back when.

        It solves some other problems too - like space for videos. I could host 10s of terabytes of video at home, and there's no monthly storage fee. On a hosting account that gets crazy expensive.

        @barbra @Li @anneroth @cavallette If A/I had tried this sort of thing, the Internet providers would've refused to keep them as clients.

        Also, your "free" 10 TB of storage at home isn't free for folks who need to buy their disks and replacements when they fail, pay their electricity bills, account for their additional time managing their home server, etc.

          @barbra @Li @anneroth @cavallette Moreover, the A/I statement about shutting down didn't say they were out of technical options to keep services up. It said that A/I keeping things up would make their clients the next targets. None of the technical approaches you are bringing up would address that problem.

              if so then what would be so wrong with simply making that clear so people can include it in their threat models. this is not a valid reason to shut everything down, and likely indeed not their actual reason

                          @hsza @cavallette @david42 @barbra @anneroth id say thats the basis of all the power structures, they all expect you not to actually resist, making it easy to "deal to" the few who do resist, bonus points if you can equate "resisting the government" with "bad immoral action" or whatever

                          uh.. anyway, the threat is real regardless so.,,

                                      @anneroth @cavallette In Dutch, but no pay wall. This is a podcast we published today: Ik luister naar 'Zo bepalen de VS wie online mag bestaan – ook in Europa' (NRC Vandaag) in de NRC Audio app: https://audio.nrc.nl/episode/181338194?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nrc.nl%2Fnieuws%2F2026%2F09%2F08%2Fzo-bepalen-de-vs-wie-online-mag-bestaan-ook-in-europa-a4936115

                                      @Marloezovic Thanks! I'm afraid my Dutch won't be quite good enough 🙂 (and the website does ask for a subscriber login). But great you're following up!

                                        @anneroth @cavallette I wasn't aware of the login, but it's also on all other platforms

                                          @Marloezovic @anneroth @cavallette Ik zou het graag willen luisteren maar op de NRC moet je wel een abonnement hebben.

                                          Maar het blijkt wel hier toegangelijk te zijn. Al met een minute reklames in het begin van de podcast.
