New study: most climate models underestimate the decline of the Atlantic overturning circulation #AMOC. The AMOC is on course to slow by more than 50% by the end of the century.

Very likely the AMOC will then be past the tipping point for full shutdown.

This is very, very bad.

I do a fair amount of that!
I think most people are living lives of quiet desperation. It's too big and too distant, and they're constantly told they can't make a difference, so ... why worry?

There's always a way to help, or at least to minimize one's own contribution to the problem.I think a lot of people simply don't think about it at all.

https://us.cnn.com/2026/04/16/climate/atlantic-ocean-circulation-collapse-update@rahmstorf This probably will be one of those crucial turning points. Without heat dispersion, Europe, for example, will face arctic temperatures, rendering EVs and air-air heat pumps powered by solar cells much less efficient, if not even ending up in total failure. Freezing water on overhead powerlines will inhibit energy distribution to a certain degree, as observed in Canada during high jet stream amplitudes.
We might really lack the imagination on what we are facing here.

@Amorpheus plus, buildings have been constructed with only certain wind and snow loads in mind, following the building code and local load maps. Some of them will collapse.

https://us.cnn.com/2026/04/16/climate/atlantic-ocean-circulation-collapse-updateThe real issue isn’t whether it gets colder or more unstable.
The real issue is that we lose our most important foundation: predictability. If the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation becomes unstable, climate models lose reliability. And without reliable models, there is no solid basis for agriculture, infrastructure, or long-term planning.
This isn’t about temperature. It’s about the loss of predictability.
