@dilmandila i learned about the existence of Glama.ai today and the thing i gravitated most around is the "maintenance" rating:

Maintenance health based on commit activity, issue responsiveness, release frequency, and community profile.

    "A" = actively maintained. "F" = abandoned or archived.

search for anything you want related to something on the internet (suggested searches: google, minecraft, bluesky and finally mastodon). what do you see? a bunch of abandoned shit. this metric isn't just "had an update recently", this is "does anyone who worked on this give a shit?" and the answer is no. no one gives a shit about things they already made and maintaining something a random plagiarism generator made is the absolute worst experience you can have in programming so no one is doing it.

this is from a group of people who have apparently smart agents that can "just do things" for them without needing involvement, like keeping an app up to date. literally the value proposition of this application of LLMs - the boring stuff no one wants to do.

even if they did do that extremely well, why would you waste tokens on something you're done with? why do anything to a fragile codebase that does everything you need?

and finally, look at the duplication ("google" search is good for this). assuming earnest effort, it's "just" massive duplication and solo development that can't be collaborated on. assuming malicious intent, some of those projects must be credential stealers.

and the slop machine operators are proud of all of this.

@tyzbit @dilmandila Thanks for the link. What I also find alarming when it comes to calling this "open source" is that this probably won't result in any well-defined module or library that can be reused by other people. LLM coding tools rely so much on existing frameworks or packages.
But will their output result in a versatile UI toolkit for people who want to make other Adobe/ArtCraft-like programs? Probably not. It's a disastrous dead-end for the open source software ecosystem.

@dilmandila There's not a good FOSS alternative to InDesign either. There's Affinity, which is 'free', but owned by Canva, so not really. And no Linux version. Sure, there's LaTex and its cousins, but good luck getting the designers to work with that. I don't even really want to work with that. Back in the day, I used FrameMaker for everything, but Adobe has ruined that too.

@maccruiskeen @dilmandila I've used it for many things. It's great. Maybe your issue is that you were expecting the same exact user interface you were using in InDesign and Scribus, not being a clone but an alternative, does not have the exact same interface.

@dilmandila @Gargron I love Gimp! Because of it, I don't even know how to work on Photoshop. But, TBF, I'm not a pro user.

@diraquel @dilmandila @Gargron@mastodon.social my main gripe with the GNU Image Manipulation Program— and by extension, its maintainers —is that their chosen acronym/name is literally a slur for disabled people and they apparently chose it that way with that in mind/on purpose because they thought it would be funny.

The program itself is very useful and I use it frequently.

Unfortunately many very nice pieces of software are made by utter tools.

@howtophil @dilmandila That was not it. I've used FrameMaker, Quark, InDesign, other things. Scribus seemed like a toy. It couldn't manage a book-length document.

@howtophil @dilmandila Well, I downloaded it to have another look. It seems better--it didn't choke on 200 pages of text--but still seems a little lacking. Like, why is hyphenation control document-wide? That's a weird choice. And you can set number of hyphens, but not number of characters before and after? You can set min word spacing, but not max. It appears to have a web-pdf output facility (but no epub), but no accessibility features. So that's useless. Does search support regex? The very limited documentation isn't clear. Initial laying-on of hands suggests it still has a ways to go.

@cuirass_entertainment @randygalbraith @dilmandila for us it's Fedora, Krita and a XPpen Artist Pro for our oldest. Mostly thanks to the wonderful articles by @davidrevoy

Since this is a Wintendo free gamer household I was really happy that this combination worked out great and we didn't have to introduce her to Adobe products at all.

This is depressing. Perfectly good alternatives to all Adobe have existed for many years and are used at pro level, but someone hallucinates some code with claude (which I hear was trained on code of programs like gimp and inkscape) and suddenly everyone is raving about it being the end of Adobe, though the thing they praise is at best entry level stuff. But like other snake oil sellers, they claim it will get there, though their "in one month" is now "many months" #artcraft #foss

@dilmandila At some point it's going to tread on one of Adobe's patents then it's over I think. There's absolutely no way Adobe will turn a blind eye to someone literally trying to duplicate their products.

@bekopharm @cuirass_entertainment @dilmandila @davidrevoy I have 4 daughters (age 38 to 23). My 2nd and 4th pursue art. For my 2nd it was GIMP and 4th was Krita. The banter I have with my 4th orbits around GIMP being the program for older people. Of course I use GIMP but only to crop and scale photos. Cheers, -Randy

@dilmandila Honestly, that part isn't particularly depressing to me. What is depressing is this list of supposedly FOSS projects that have bought into the "AI" scam. Including, of course, the Linux kernel itself.

@dilmandila Same thoughts here... But most people also claim that they need Microsoft Word because you can't get anything done with LibreOffice. Or that they actually need Photoshop instead of Gimp. Hell, let them vibecode what they feel like. At least it's open source and it might dispell some of the magic of pricey closed software. Personally I always believed that software should be free and with AI there's much less incentive to steal code anyway...

@dr_laemmerbein @dilmandila My big issue with Libreoffice is that the video embed is not great in Impress. And as a college adjunct, I need solid equivalent functioning there.

But I use writer and calc often.
