There's a problem I think between tech activism and general left activism.
When I say tech activism I mean the people who call out stuff like #AI and champion #privacy etc. I don't know if those people identify as activists though.
But what I often see on Fedi isn't shared by the wider left. So many on the left are still on fucking Substack or something from Meta. They continue to support tech oligarchs by being an active and popular presence on corporate owned platforms. And we know those platforms don't value the left and will shadowban any account that gets too influential.
I've long tried to bring people over to Fedi. Maybe I haven't tried all that hard, but I personally don't see why it would be difficult to open up an account here and just start posting stuff.
That's the bit I don't get. Most of them don't even bother trying.
Which is why I firmly believe most left wing commentators are ensnared by the same corporate mindset many of us are. It's the mindset that values brand names over smaller, independent products and services
It's true people will flock to a new social media site only when it has been reported in corporate news that the site is growing in popularity.
Fedi is popular, but that rarely gets such a hype from corporate news. Funny that.

Fedi is popular, but that rarely gets such a hype from corporate news. Funny that.
But it all comes down to reach and large numbers of people seeing content. The left aren't concerned with how they actively support the corporate hegemony.
As long as they get the readers/viewers and therefore donations and subscriptions, they will only focus on corporate sites.
It's long been clear to me that's a losing battle, and so much left wing discourse is stifled or banned because of corporate or establishment interests.
But the left are always championing people over profit, and independent over corporate, but they don't see social media in that vein. And that is why I don't see much of data privacy and suchlike outside of Fedi.
It's disappointing.

@lydiaconwell absolutely agreed! Same I'm trying with my meta-followers. It is slow but some have to draw attention....

@lydiaconwell so true!
you know how #carnists like to joke how #vegans talk about #veganism all the time? but they don't realize they're doing the inverse when they casually talk about abusing animals: going #fishing, doing a #BBQ, #BurgerKing, #hunting, #leather, ...
(this also happens on the #left )
well, it's the same with #meta! and i've decided to be that "annoying fediverse person" who brings it up every time i hear »put it on #insta « or a #facebook event link is shared in a chat.
put it on peertube. like & share on masto. send a screenshot of that #fb post instead of guiding people towards #fascist so-me.

@lydiaconwell the ever true prophecy of capitalist realism

@pelle @lydiaconwell You’ll just get alienated, very fast. Do it laterally – don’t tell people to use decentralized protocols, but do it in a meaningful way and passively show them that you can live a more fulfilling, meaningful life with free software.
(By the way, microblogging implementations aren’t and cannot be free software.)

@oceane @lydiaconwell
happy to contradict you here: being outspoken has worked well, and a good portion of my friends are now regularly on mastodon, and even on peertube. -

@oceane
( that said, i did change my way of talking from »don't post on facebook; they incited a genocide in myanmar,« to »please make sure you're also posting on fediverse to not exclude those who aren't on fascist-owned so-me.« for me, the »do this« has worked much better than the »don't do that« in terms of friends joining mastodon. i'm not sure which advocacy works best; just saying that being slightly annoying •can• work, too. )
