@cwebber it doesnt matter because its decentralized. a hacker collective isnt organized like a terrorist group. its the same reason why the govt has been unable to attack antifa, dispite also being considered a terrorist group by the administration

Couldn't the Reich just seize domains they don't like?

the fact that "antifa" is clearly not an identifiable group of people (unlike the nazis) just shows how stupid these people are. You would have thought that with their two brain cells they could have arrived at antifa = short for antifascist.

Not stupid. Fascist regimes needs an enemy to use as a shorthand for power graps. You may remember how in Animal Farm every step away from egelitarian system was explained by need to stop infiltration by Snowball's¹ spies.

Meanwhile the regime's continuous efforts to bolster the farm against outside enemies (whi may or may not exist) turns the Farm into a hierarchial structure that doesn't differ in any important way from other farms.

And besides the point, but you may also recall how both film adaptations of Animal Farm swap the ending to something else, thus missing the point.

The CIA-funded film from 1954 concludes the story by a new revolution to uphold the original ideals.

The Hallmark film from 1999 shows a return to human-led administration as improvement from corrupt pig-led one (that was admired by neighbouring farms).

Edit: there's a third one that apparently advocates anarchism.

@cwebber USA=1970s USSR, we became the evil empire we opposed.

          @RevSPLR @cwebber

Remember that the problems of USSR in the 1970s was due to need to find premiers who had taken part in the revolution. As the revolution was ever-more in the past, the premiers started to suffer from problems of old age, including dementia.

I'm not sure could we call them "evil" though, as it casts USA as "good". This being the regime that at the time massacred kids in Vietnam, couped democratic polities, etc.

decentralized media thwarts the power of money (or force) to shape public opinion. the web gave us speech, fedi does it for attention. of course we're a threat.

what annoys me is that we're not taking advantage of our power here. most would rather keep their nice but conservative relatives away than grow by focusing moderation only on harassment. we've somehow managed to browse a web full of shitty sites for decades and it didn't become a Nazi bar.

@wjmaggos Perhaps we've avoided becoming a Nazi bar by keeping conservative relatives away and focusing moderation on harassment rather than pursuing growth.

@MaddieM4 @cwebber the problem is that most European banks are too scared of pissing off the US to not immediately debank you for being sanctioned.

Now, “As a matter of principle, the EU considers the extra-territorial application of sanctions contrary to international law.”, and
they can just overturn foreign sanctions and prohibit their enforcement, but last time I checked they didn't use this for the Hague ICC judges so I doubt they would use it for anyone else.

The Hague ICC judges thing was because VISA and MasterCard are from USA, even if the card is from a European bank. USA can shut them down from European consumers without our banks doing anything.

The US has declared Autistici/Inventati, an Italian anarchist hacker (in the classic sense of the term) collective, a terrorist organization. https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/sb0616/

But what you really ought to read is this article about A/I's history, and what this means https://web.archive.org/web/20260828071449/https://cavallette.noblogs.org/2026/08/10083/2

I'm concerned that the US government is starting to identify decentralized media infrastructure as a threat to its survival. Repost information about this broadly, and if you have media contacts, inform them of counter-narratives; there could come a time where the fediverse, or any decentralized network infrastructure, is a target as well if we don't sound the alarms now.

EDIT: I linked to the wrong page! The second link is now fixed 🙂

                                - As I explained in my quote for this post, alt OSes are already being targeted too, the US is turning into NK, and worst-case, could be locked to a state intranet with its own Red Star OS, and MS is already laying the groundwork for this with their Windows 365 cloud desktop, the powers that be could just pay MS to make Windows 365 the state intranet OS and force it onto everyone.

There could be a time also when Linux and BSD PCs are targeted like alt Android phones are being targeted right now, assuming everyone isn't forced onto state-provided thin clients tied to a central government intranet first.

The noblogs link is now dead, btw.

@wjmaggos Perhaps we've avoided becoming a Nazi bar by keeping conservative relatives away and focusing moderation on harassment rather than pursuing growth.

how did the web do it?

the Nazi bar analogy only works when their presence deters others. with decentralization and a lack of algos, that doesn't happen on the web. it won't happen here either.

@iju @tribactam @cwebber fascists use the demarcation of labels like terrorists to make sweeping changes against civil liberties; it is impossible to prove someone is a "member" of antifa because it isnt a things with members. its like how mao called for the excecution of capitalists or pinochet with "leftists" as if they were organized fifth column groups in these countries. all the A/I hackers need to do is stop using the name.

the goal is to create a chilling effect, but if thr A/I hackers use a different name each time, it becomes a cat and mouse game that the hackers will win

@wjmaggos The web didn't do it. It's currently consumed by fascist (funded and ideological) AI.

The web failed horribly at not becoming a Nazi bar.

the vast majority of the web is still not AI shit and while Nazis have always been allowed on the web, it has only been very recently that AI is a problem.

you're gonna argue that our conservative relatives should never have been allowed to use the same internet we do? that pushing them to instead use a web shared by fascists where our voices were not present would have been better for society?

the fedi doesn't just moderate harassment. it limits all speech that isn't progressive.
