    @tribactam @notavi10 @cwebber

And besides the point, but you may also recall how both film adaptations of Animal Farm swap the ending to something else, thus missing the point.

The CIA-funded film from 1954 concludes the story by a new revolution to uphold the original ideals.

The Hallmark film from 1999 shows a return to human-led administration as improvement from corrupt pig-led one (that was admired by neighbouring farms).

Edit: there's a third one that apparently advocates anarchism.

I agree. Maybe calling them stupid is missing the point - they are dangerous idealogues who, as you point out, always need a bogeyman.

The US has declared Autistici/Inventati, an Italian anarchist hacker (in the classic sense of the term) collective, a terrorist organization. https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/sb0616/

But what you really ought to read is this article about A/I's history, and what this means https://web.archive.org/web/20260828071449/https://cavallette.noblogs.org/2026/08/10083/2

I'm concerned that the US government is starting to identify decentralized media infrastructure as a threat to its survival. Repost information about this broadly, and if you have media contacts, inform them of counter-narratives; there could come a time where the fediverse, or any decentralized network infrastructure, is a target as well if we don't sound the alarms now.

EDIT: I linked to the wrong page! The second link is now fixed 🙂

EDIT 2: A/I's domains have been revoked! So added an archive.org link

@cwebber Second link may be right, but which DNS services still link to noblogs.org? Might need a repost to pastebin or something.

            - As I explained in my quote for this post, alt OSes are already being targeted too, the US is turning into NK, and worst-case, could be locked to a state intranet with its own Red Star OS, and MS is already laying the groundwork for this with their Windows 365 cloud desktop, the powers that be could just pay MS to make Windows 365 the state intranet OS and force it onto everyone.

There could be a time also when Linux and BSD PCs are targeted like alt Android phones are being targeted right now, assuming everyone isn't forced onto state-provided thin clients tied to a central government intranet first.

The noblogs link is now dead, btw.

@wjmaggos Perhaps we've avoided becoming a Nazi bar by keeping conservative relatives away and focusing moderation on harassment rather than pursuing growth.

how did the web do it?

the Nazi bar analogy only works when their presence deters others. with decentralization and a lack of algos, that doesn't happen on the web. it won't happen here either.

Not stupid. Fascist regimes needs an enemy to use as a shorthand for power graps. You may remember how in Animal Farm every step away from egelitarian system was explained by need to stop infiltration by Snowball's¹ spies.

Meanwhile the regime's continuous efforts to bolster the farm against outside enemies (whi may or may not exist) turns the Farm into a hierarchial structure that doesn't differ in any important way from other farms.

@iju @tribactam @cwebber fascists use the demarcation of labels like terrorists to make sweeping changes against civil liberties; it is impossible to prove someone is a "member" of antifa because it isnt a things with members. its like how mao called for the excecution of capitalists or pinochet with "leftists" as if they were organized fifth column groups in these countries. all the A/I hackers need to do is stop using the name.

the goal is to create a chilling effect, but if thr A/I hackers use a different name each time, it becomes a cat and mouse game that the hackers will win

@wjmaggos The web didn't do it. It's currently consumed by fascist (funded and ideological) AI.

The web failed horribly at not becoming a Nazi bar.

the vast majority of the web is still not AI shit and while Nazis have always been allowed on the web, it has only been very recently that AI is a problem.

you're gonna argue that our conservative relatives should never have been allowed to use the same internet we do? that pushing them to instead use a web shared by fascists where our voices were not present would have been better for society?

the fedi doesn't just moderate harassment. it limits all speech that isn't progressive.

The point isn't to catch A/I, but to create a cat-and-mouse - game that allows destruction of civil liberties as desired.

The point of Snowball isn't that they were sending spies to infiltrate the farm, but by claiming they were doing so allowed population manipulation and control.

@cwebber that's why we should consider supporting projects like OpenNIC and building decentralized, grassroots infrastructure

Autistici/Inventati's domains have now been revoked. I updated the link in the above post with a wayback machine copy.

Every now and then someone tells me, "We have a decentralized naming system, it's called DNS!" and I say, no we don't, DNS is extremely centralized? And if that wasn't clear to you before, hopefully it's clear to you today.

@cwebber that is pretty crazy. any website a government doesn't like can just be removed from the Internet now apparently, simply by labeling it as terrorist propaganda

@cwebber I'm all for setting up alternate roots and also supporting smarter DNS resolvers like unwind in more places. (I still resolve that domain just fine but it's not clear if it's unwind hitting something with a longer ttl somewhere or a nuance in how it was "revoked")

@cwebber https://noblogs.org and https://www.inventati.org have not been revoked. looks like only autistici.org has been affected.

@cararemixed "alternative DNS systems" doesn't really help though, because the TLS CA system is designed to work with the centralized view of "DNS truth"
