@SecureOwl Heh, before I ended up in computer science I was really thinking if I should become veterinarian. While looking up how every day life for them is I learned that for countryside vet there is big problem to stay fit, as almost every time when you go to someones farm you are offered coffee and pastries, like you do in Finland when someone visits. And it is really difficult to keep saying no, even though you just ate cinnamon bun 20 minutes ago. Especially as 20minutes without coffee is tough for a Finn.

I wonder if this is a regionalism, because as a born-and-raised American from what constitutes (just barely) the South, not offering at least a glass of water is borderline offensive.

Agreed, it was definitely a thing I picked up from my parents growing up in Mississippi as a Gen X kid and further refined this custom after spending many years in Japan. We've always kept cold bottled sports drinks on hand — especially in summer months — for contractors or movers. They seem to appreciate the gesture.
