    @ahhhhhhhhhhh @ehashman

I started using Keepass after I saw Bruce Schneier recommend it.

Alright folks, it looks like the #1Password execs aren't budging. Their co-founder is framing critics of DHH as calling him "evil," saying this is "unfair" and creating a chilling environment. This is a nonsense response to critique of a man who has called for ethnic cleansing. https://www.theverge.com/tech/988536/1password-dhh-linux-controversy

It's time to #Drop1Password. Cancel your subscription and share a screenshot. Tell them why you're cancelling. You will not lose access to your service until your subscription expires, giving the 1Password team the opportunity to reverse their sponsorship and/or you time to migrate.

@ehashman I actually stopped giving them money a while ago. I'm still using the last version that could be purchased (v7?), and never moved to a subscription.

Of course, that's getting a little annoying now. I guess the obvious solution is to move to bitwarden? Or use whatever's built in to my browser or MacOS?

@ehashman I need to figure out the steps to import/compare with what I have in Apple passwords. And what stuff doesn’t import.

                      Starting points for me/others.

How much of https://1password.com/compare/apple-passwords-vs-1password is still true, or applies to me.

                      https://9to5mac.com/2026/02/25/heres-how-to-switch-from-1password-to-apple-passwords/ seems simple:

                      Export your passwords from 1Password

Open and unlock the 1Password app on your Mac

From the menubar, File > Export and select the account you want to export

                      Enter your account password

When asked to choose a format, choose CSV and select Export Data

Choose where you want to export your 1Password data and select open

Import your passwords into Apple Passwords

Open the Passwords app and authenticate

From the menubar, File > Import passwords from file

                      Select the CSV file

                      Securely delete the CSV file

@becomingwisest @ehashman I did this conversion a few months ago. There are some things different about the way Apple thinks about passwords, so there's stuff to get used to. The process of letting Apple fill the password is clunky. It will keep the url of the site; but you don't see that in the browser extension, so you have two steps where 1P had one. Apple I think won't let you have two different urls on the same site, it trims off all the subfolder stuff.

@becomingwisest @ehashman Apple will sometimes ask if you want to update the password after you've successfully used a password. Maybe there's something about that I'm not understanding.

Apple's program synchronizes across your devices and family shares. But it takes an unreal amount of time. I changed my work password last week and it took more than 24 hours for the change to propagate fully.

@becomingwisest @ehashman (Two steps: first open the Passwords app, get the url for the site; open it in your browser; then you might have to open the password extension (Apple wants a 6 digit code) before it will auto-fill).)

@becomingwisest @ehashman Apple insists on locking the app on a very short interval (a couple of minutes I think) and I haven't found a way to lengthen it. This is annoying if I'm fiddling with my Nextcloud server and have to sudo with the password fairly frequently.

@ehashman I'm not quite all-in (Mac laptop + iPad + Android phone), but my work is so skewed towards my laptop that I don't really care if I need to enter passwords manually on other devices. I'll check out Apple Passwords, thanks.

@ehashman It took us a year to get my mother to learn how to use 1password. I'm not going through that again. So this is going to have to wait. Sure, it's bad, but it's just one of a long list of bad, and it's nowhere close to the top.

@ehashman @Viss I left 1Password in the dust over a year ago, for a variety of reasons that predated any of this drama. It was a pain, because there was no good export/import path, and because there was a lot of really old junk from ten years of use in the database, but an hour or two a day in the evening for a week got it all sorted. I’m glad I went to the effort.

@thomasareed @ehashman i started out on 1pw because when i got hired at twitter it was a forced thing. every staff member was made to use it, and it did legitimately raise the bar for attackers. everything went to shit when they started forcing cloud
