    @jwcph Is Linux not ready for the real world, or is it not ready for graphic artists and video editors?

    The Linux kernel is powerful, and distros have recently become quite user-friendly. The main problem with Linux in the case of audiovisual production is that the major software in the field does not run on Linux, and companies have no interest in the platform. And the open-source alternatives currently are not good enough compared to the more famous software.

    @Francehelder Nope - the problem with Linux is that it's not a mature OS & that's why companies aren't interested in it.

    It may be powerful but it's in the sense that a formula 1 racer is powerful; it still takes a highly qualified driver & a team of specialized engineers, or it will crash or break down - it's not like you can use it to take the kids to soccer practice or any of the other things people need a car for.

    Like race cars, Linux is an experimental platform.

      @Francehelder @jwcph

      You nailed it. This is a perfect niche case where Adobe (a truly shitty company) is the primary thing holding that group of people hostage.

      For day to day stuff, Linux is fine. I game on it with only the rare issue. My partner uses it for almost everything and they're a very casual user.

      I use Windows for work (no choice) and every day it's a struggle. Things don't work correctly, vibe-coded shit breaks something every time I reboot, it's slow AF. But I'm not a graphics person.

        @jwcph @Francehelder The word "mature" is fighting talk.

        I have been a professional computer toucher to small and very large (multinational) companies worldwide and may know a thing or two about enterprise-scale OS deployment. I've also written tiny OSes of which one was shipped in hundreds of thousands of consumer product units.

        In practice I'd say that Linux is as grown up as all the paid for OSes I have encountered. (I have NOT spent significant time on mainframe-like machines however.)

          Even discounting the current AI debacle, all signs indicate that for any foreseeable future Linux will remain a niche plaything for people who care about the OS & the computer itself, not a serious or reliable workspace for people doing other things.

            @jwcph I get without arguing that it's not for everyone, but saying Linux is "not a mature OS" and is "an experimental platform" sounds extremely weird. I personnally work in a company of 7000 employees where Linux is the default (for everyone) so what you're saying looks out of touch with the state of Linux

              @jwcph @Francehelder I agree. Compared to older, more mature open source systems like the BSDs and Solaris (illumos), Linux is a toy OS. I genuinely wonder why people still seem to have a soft spot for it. Maybe because of the mascot.

                  @jeolen @Francehelder I know forward-thinking orgs & companies have done this & I keep asking our own IT dep at work when we'll get it - but they, as many other companies, won't touch it & having tried myself like a dozen times to switch to Linux & failed every time, I can't say that I blame them. The kind of experience the guys are having in this video just aren't atypical, in my experience at least & that's no good for a production environment. Your workplace has a crew for it but most don't.

                    @jeolen @Francehelder I should note that I keep asking IT where I work when we'll get Linux - I would love nothing more! - but they look like rabbits caught in the headlights of a car, even though they're a well-staffed, professional support department for a 1000+ employee company...

                      @jwcph @Francehelder this take is dumb as shit. I've used Linux professionally for over a decade. Just because you say something doesn't make it accurate.
