    If you're on a Mastodon server that needs to have the highest level of user safety, you might want to talk to your admin about whether they should activate "limited federation mode".

    This mode prioritises safety over connectivity, and means a server manually chooses which servers it allows federation with, while blocking all the rest by default. More info at:

    ➡️ https://fedi.tips/creating-an-isolated-server

    (Its main disadvantage is it's a lot harder to follow accounts on other servers.)

      @FediTips
      Doesn't this remove the core reason to have the fediverse? This is censorship, and must not be normalized.

        I can see how this could be useful when using the instance as "intranet"

        But otherwise it would make it a "antisocial media"

          @FediTips By that logic why aren't all accounts on the Fedi just automatically friends?

              No. It's not censorship, it's server owners choosing who they federate with.

              If you're running a server for a particularly vulnerable group, this would be a strong extra layer of safety which may be needed so that the group can use the Fediverse.

              No server federates with everyone, servers would drown in illegal material and spam if they did so. There are two ways of restricting federation: allowlists and blocklists. Mastodon allows admins to choose either method.

                It's an option that is there for those who want or need to use it. No one is being forced to use it, and the vast majority of servers don't use it.

                It's just meant to give people the tools they need for their particular situation.
