    Yeah, I had 19.8. Technically I didn't have a Walkman, Sony got nowhere near my portable tape player.

      18/20 – I've never *owned* an encyclopedia although we had three in the house when I was growing up, and I didn't have a computer at home between about 1990 and 2009, so no dialup internet.

      @blogdiva
      I do currently own a 2023 Grand Larousse Illustré, which has a whole second half for proper nouns that's surprisingly encyclopedic, so maybe that counts.

      And yes, my friends make fun of me for still having dead-tree reference books. Funny that they always do this when I find an answer faster than they can on their "Internet".

          @bryanredeagle @blogdiva people always seem to forget that children have adults around them that have old stuff.

          And children were taught to use computers and stuff in the 90s, the rest kind of follows no?

          It's not like you had to be 30 to use the internet back then, it was on the middle school computers too.

          My money is on this post being a troll =P Most like this are.

          @bipolaron @bryanredeagle your privilege is showing. i taught high school in the 1990s here in nyc and not all our schools had internet access. certainly not in Puerto Rico. and yes, we were most likely in college or a job in legal or finance if we were using the internet BEFORE the web. the www isn't the internet. i had to telnet and gopher to do searches for my academic research.

          when it comes to gadgets, old and new obviously coexist. when it comes to the internet? that’s the divide.

            @claralistensprechen3rd nope. all Gen X were already adults or teenagers when that happened. i had my kids and my baby sister was in her early 20s when that happened. am 1966 and she’s 1979, so we’re both GenX. our brother (my puerto rican twin) was too (1967).

              @blogdiva @flipper WOWzer. They declared bankruptcy quite a bit before that. That must have been "the mother ship".
              Radio Shack went belly up quite some time ago too but it found new life as an on-line vendor, so I suppose it's all possible.

                      @blogdiva @bryanredeagle NYC schools didn't have internet connections in the late 90s? I'm surprised Indianapolis was ahead to be honest, but thanks for the insight. It always felt like we were a decade behind.

                                @blogdiva @Shards In this era of enshittification, I'm back to paying our rent by check. Our building switched online payments to Bilt, which looks like a vibe-coded security nightmare/credit card scam, so it's time to return to the 80s.
