How can the: "here is the stochastic average of the training data" be of better quality?
That is not how LLMs work.The code quality is shit, especially without rigorous human supervision.
@Garonenur @argv_minus_one @wobweger @libreoffice @grvsmth @moskitokoenig
I am speaking from experience, not theory
It is not as simple as "LLMs write better code". But from now on the best code will be aided by LLMs in its construction. That is true now
-
If AI is producing code of higher quality than what you can write, then that doesn't speak highly of AI; it speaks poorly of you.
As a professional programmer with 30+ years experience, I need tools that work correctly every time. AI only sometimes works correctly, and that's not good enough. I have left many tools behind because they proved unreliable, and this is one of them.
@argv_minus_one @wobweger @libreoffice @grvsmth @moskitokoenig
Have you tried using a coding agent in a suitable domain? (They are not original, they are thorough)

@worik @argv_minus_one @wobweger @libreoffice @grvsmth @moskitokoenig not if we burn down every fucking fascist data center.
And no, people using LLMs are deteriorating in their skills so fast, overall code quality (which was shit anyway to begin with) will only go down. -

Thank you so much for not succumbing to the brainless "AI" cult! It means a lot to me to read principled and sensible statements like this

I am also speaking from experience, and my experience makes me glad that you and I haven't crossed paths professionally.

Indeed. LLMs are trained on 100% of everything, and as Theodore Sturgeon once famously pointed out, 90% of everything is crap. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturgeon%27s_law
It's a recipe for failure, and sure enough… https://www.pcmag.com/news/vibe-coding-fiasco-replite-ai-agent-goes-rogue-deletes-company-database

Of course not. Under no circumstances will I allow one of those things to execute arbitrary commands on my machine without review. I'm not completely insane.

@libreoffice Have you ever done a study on the readability of your website? I think you have obvious contrast issues because of that bright green.

@libreoffice Could I provide a translation into norwegian for this image?
-
@chaekyung@mastodon.cloud @libreoffice If its a LLM I do not want it. Ever. For whatever reason. And if it downloads 200MB of stuff I do not want to use automatically, I do not want it either.
I'd be ok if a optional extension provides TTS-Services, but it should not enable itself on its own. And it should not be part of the LibreOffice Core.
This is LibreOffice, not a Microsoft Product, it should not install things on its own. It should not decide on itself to burn CPU-Time to do things the user did not ask for (looking at you, Firefox „Tab group suggestions“)

@libreoffice I wonder how long this policy will last. If LibreOffice is to be a professionally used office suite, some AI features will eventually be necessary. If they aren't added, LibreOffice will become a suite for a small group of old-fashioned nerds.

@michal @libreoffice Which "AI" (quatation marks very much intended) features do you deem so necessary that an extension is not sufficient?

@Razemix @libreoffice I have no idea; I don't use office suites. However, various tools such as email summarization, checking of facts in documents (not typos), recommended next steps for documents within a company's workflow etc. it will become a standard part of office workflows, because they can make work more efficient.

@libreoffice Nice. Here in Norway, we've been doing the no (built in) AI features too: https://vivaldi.com/blog/keep-exploring/

@michal @libreoffice But even if it did (which I highly doubt), does it need to be built-in? Because that's what the original post is about. No one is stopping you from making an extension with the desired functionality and deploying it company-wise.

@Razemix @libreoffice Personally, I think it will become a feature that's enabled by default, just like typo correction, collaborative file editing or adding comments. If 95% of users enable a certain feature, it makes sense to have it enabled by default.

@michal @libreoffice Where do you take this data from? Almost every product I know of that implemented some sort of LLM into it enabled it by default (and in the best case scenario lets you turn it off). That doesn't tell you anything about whether people use it, let alone whether they wanted the feature in the first place.

@Razemix @michal @libreoffice and add privacy issues when you share internal company document with LLM provider? Are you willing to send your manufacturing secrets to random company somewhere in the states? Really?
