Am I supposed to morse code in my WiFi password on the program button?404 media just dropped a story that ice and police can use AI based on a photo from Airbnb appliances to track people. It sounds so bizarre. so yeah, I want my appliances stupid, disconnected and useful. Enough surveillance tech.

"Oh"@quixoticgeek I would expect an internet connected fridge to do things like
* scan the barcode on each product you put into it
* tell you to throw it away when it's one microsecond past the "use by" date
* offer to order a replacement for you
* show you advertisements for other things you might like to buyand so on.
I would expect it to be terribly confused by your putting something into it that didn't have a barcode, y'know, like fresh produce, stuff from your garden, stuff you'd cooked. If there's no barcode how can it sell you anything??

"Oh"@quixoticgeek Give me so-called 'dumb' appliances. I don't need to know what it is doing and it is just expensive fluff.

Yeah, more "doing the job" and "being repairable" and less "narcing on me for microwaving a burrito at 0345" -
@quixoticgeek but possibly so retailers can monitor and verify the temperatures across their coolchain storage, to ensure the food they sell is safe within the printed use by date. Also, perhaps to add one or two days to that shelf life? It's not entirely mad, but it does raise questions of the costs and benefits.
@AndyDearden @quixoticgeek
But, there is person monitoring and no person notified of the increase - what were they paying for? + their oosses will be covered by insurance but betting it creates shortages & consumers pay -

@FranceskaMann @EndlessMason @quixoticgeek this sadly does not depend on appliance smartness. It is just matching the appliance in the picture with photos from airbnb dot com

it really pisses me off that my washing machine has a Wi-Fi signal. WTF. There is no need for that.
@FranceskaMann @quixoticgeek It pisses me off that my washing machine not only has wifi but that some of the functions are only accessible via the manufacturer's app, and even then some of the functions of the app are only available if you're using a (recent) phone made by the same company (looking at you Samsung).

@Brett @quixoticgeek as an American, our version has a gun by the printer—my elaboration on that is that the gun is of a traditional hammer-fired persuasion, has an explicit safety and whose design has been materially unchanged for decades.

This is why I do not care that AI causes big big problems and keeps escaping.
Let it happen, let people start wondering if they need all this shit.
Fridges that tell you it is time to do the groceries ? > use your brain
Cars connected with the whole world (including Trump, Putin and Musk)? > we don’t need that
Etc etc etc

"Oh"@quixoticgeek In my opinion, we've gotten to a point where (generally speaking, there are exceptions like kitchenaid mixers) the consumer appliance industry has gotten to a point where spending more gets you a worse product. Spending more doesn't buy you a higher quality product, it buys you more complexity and more gimmicks that just break or it buys you wifi connectivity that they use to lock basic features behind subscriptions.
