NEW | British Museum Removes “Palestine” from Displays Amid Pressure
The British Museum has removed references to “Palestine” from several maps and information panels in its ancient Middle East galleries, following pressure from the pro-Israel group UK Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI). The museum said the term was used inaccurately and is no longer considered historically “neutral.”
Displays that previously referred to parts of the southern Levant as Palestine, and described some individuals as being “of Palestinian descent,” have been revised. In some cases, “Palestinian descent” has been replaced with “Canaanite descent,” and broader regional references have been narrowed to Canaan or the kingdoms of “Israel and Judah”.
Critics argue the move contributes to the erasure of Palestinian historical presence and identity. A public petition opposing the changes has gathered thousands of signatures, describing the revisions as part of a wider pattern of sidelining Palestinian identity from public institutions.
