Hey #mastodon peeps! A colleague is trying to come in, however, she is having issues on picking her user name. Any tips? She would like to use her name + last name, but Mastodon demands a correct format? Thanks!

@preservaAV
It could be boring but firstname_lastname tends to work well unless they have an ultra common name. -

@preservaAV I wonder what could be meant with a correct format... Perhaps her full name is too many characters? #askfedi @FediTips

@preservaAV I don't think there's any correct format, it just has to be a username that isn't already taken on that server.

@preservaAV If your colleague is still stuck, it occurs to me that likely this is just a quirk in the UI. When you pick a user name, I believe the software shows you what your complete fediverse address will be — so for example mine is [at] richardgrant [at] mastodon [dot] social, though only part of that is the user name that I chose. So in that respect, I guess mastodon does impose a certain format, and it's a function of how the fediverse works as a network of separate, distributed servers.

The username has to be all one word without any spaces. However, your profile's display name (which is what most people see) can be edited to be a normal looking name with spaces.
It's a bit like email addresses, you have the address itself and then there's the name that appears at the top of an email.
