When my brother Omar was doing the subtitles for the video I posted from MetLife, I thanked him. He told me there's a phrase in Arabic:
لا شكر على واجب
"La shukra ala wajeb." There is no thanks for a duty.
That stayed with me. Because that's what this has become for me and millions of others around the world. A duty. Not something deserving of praise or gratitude. Not brave. Human.12/x
@benroyce This was a disagreement between my father and myself. He said, people shouldn't be praised or rewarded for doing what they're supposed to do. I say, imagine how lovely the world would be if everyone simply did what they're supposed to; we should reward and encourage that. I say, you don't do your duty for praise, but I will praise you anyway.

@benroyce I wholeheartedly concur. Silence about what Israel is doing = support for the Zionists. Personally I could not live with that on my conscience.
The resounding silence around why Netanyahu, Trump, & Kushner orchestrated the Gaza genocide is also worthy of public examination.
The most corrupt industry on the planet is doing yet another ethnic cleansing.

@benroyce Thank you for posting this. It's such common sense as well as human. I had heard of Macklemore because I made a Macklemore cake topper for a little girl a few years ago. She clearly saw something in him others hadn't yet seen. Also, as for "no stance, both sides" yeah. I am not an Ed Sheeran fan and even less so now. There is a time to stand up and speak truth to power. This is the time.

I think it's important because he doesn't get angry. He doesn't burn bridges
And he doesn't back down from a clear moral stance. He's generous and even-handed
Effective communication on an important topic

Not particularly a fan of his music, but definitely a fan of the man himself after reading that statement. Not often you'll see artists or other public figures willing to lose big money, exposure and friendships to stand up for what's right. Absolutely fair play to him.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/mar/19/jared-kushner-gaza-waterfront-property-israel-negev@Npars01 most are not silent, it is only some of those who are "playing the game" and maybe have a lot to lose for speaking out who are silent. That is why speaking truth rather than anger is so important. Anger feels stronger but is more destructive, to all involved. It only feeds the fear that fuels the jewish anti semitism victim mindset.

@benroyce I saw Macklemore last summer, and he gave the speech. I heard no hate in what he said, just genuine empathy towards those who have suffered.

@benroyce
Wow, you are the target of a cultural boycott by proxy. The people currently in power in Israel find your words 'unpleasant'. Words that reveal the truth, they desperately want to hide itIt seems that you are important enough to them to lobby or pressure Kraft. I can't believe the leadership at Kraft took the call and actually acts on this? They even lobby other venues to join this cultural boycott.
You managed to get under their skin. I see that as a victory, however a bitter one.
-
@benroyce I read it earlier today and I admire the way he addressed the situation. Like you said: "he doesn't get angry. He doesn't burn bridges And he doesn't back down from a clear moral stance.''
@CatherineBabault its easy to get pulled into the emotion, but that only serves the main aggressors. On either side. Supporting those who can make that stand, make it with calm, and accuracy, is the best way forward, I am sure.

@benroyce My respect for Macklemore just got much higher. I wonder who Robert Kraft is and all these other "stadium owners" that went to pressure Ed Sheeran.
-
I didn't need 10 shows from Ed. I needed 2. Two chances to stand in front of 90,000 people and say the words that somehow became too dangerous to say.
Free Palestine.
But if those words cost me the stage, while turning the conversation back to Palestine, then it was the most successful tour I've ever been on.14/14
@benroyce Level headed and sound guy.
Inspiring.

@benroyce As I just said on another post, the other artists need to get the hell off of that tour. That goes double with some of the same venues also hosting Kanye West.

Ed also told me that Kraft had rallied some of the other stadium owners and collectively they gave him an ultimatum: if Macklemore stays on the tour, you will not be allowed to play in our venues. Ed was in a fucked up position. He knew it. His typical apolitical stance was being challenged in a way it never had been before. He told me that the words "Free Palestine" and the image of the Palestinian flag were hurtful to a lot of people he spoke with.

"Ed was in a fucked up position"
Hmm, Ed Sheeran has earned a lot of money, and he could afford to cancle a concert if the venue owner blackmails him...

Here's his performance that led to this:

Oof.

This whole statement is

@ApostateEnglishman @benroyce He really adopted the "there is no thank for a duty" phylosophy.
Respect

@ckd @benroyce Ed Sheeran has 27 rental properties in London; He's still going to be "earning" millions every month if he never touches a guitar. He could still play, maybe not in stadiums, but…
He had every chance to take a stand for what's right and didn't take it because it'd cost him money (he already has more than he could ever need, and it's not like he's using it to change the world)

@benroyce My appreciation has grown for Macklemore and someone else still needs to learn that you can't be neutral on a moving train and he should take responsibility for the gift he's been giving.
