@jascha Which was always why I found the fake Moon landing claims so hilarious. The number of nerdy talkative scientists and engineers they'd have had to keep silent was in the thousands and yet not one came forward with evidence of the fake. Hmmmm.
@azphilosopher @jascha also all the Hollywood people that need to make all the props, even if you hired them for an unknown project or a film you "cancel" later they would recognize their own work once it's on TV

Science is only as unbiased as the researcher, and given that most people (even women) carry unconscious bias against women, there is little chance that this issue will be addressed so easily. The same goes for racial bias. Knowing about the problem doesn't alleviate it, huge changes must be made, studies replicated, new investigations carried out.
Misogyny can be overt or not & through direct and indirect means. Neglect of female health is misogyny & wasn't accidental.

Which is where peer reviews, etc, come in.
As to specific biases that you are pointing to... I don't have specific data so I cannot comment on it.
The whole point of science, imho, it to fill in holes in our knowledge and to ask better questions.

- it's not actually a scientist but someone trying to claim the mantle of science to legitimize something that isn't science
- it's a scientist talking about something other than science (ex, I don't particularly want you to know the pin number for my bank card)

@jascha Even with controversial topics like climate change, scientists generally *want* people to know; they just don't trust many of the common channel for communicating. Media are usually more interested in hyping sensation than conveying nuance.

Scientists generally want you to know, the people that finance their work on the other hand? It depends on how marketable is the discovery
@csolisr I've never personally experienced or even remotely heard of a funder trying to influence the results of a study (and been a scientist for about 15 years now). I'm sure it can happen but it will be a negligible minority.

@jascha they want you to know so bad, they've devised a whole elaborate system around publishing their research.
They're holding regular conferences and publish everything that's been presented there as "proceedings".
They _teach_ at public institutions to make sure more people know each year.
They want you to know! That's literally their job

@jascha I can confirm this - my brother is a biochemist and he has one research project he was on that he still tells people about at bus stops.

Misogyny exists. The problem is what needs to be addressed regardless of intent, and that is bigger than all of us.

@knowprose I believe it's a systemic vs individual issue thing. Systemic bias is not intentional, but also harder to spot than individual prejudice. Like how me and many other women who consider themselves modern feminists still perpetuate(d) a "deal with it" attitude regarding period pain, which discourages those with very painful cysts and endometriosis from seeking diagnosis. Not intentional, but we need to do better

But it’s why there’s phases etc. I don’t think most are aware of how medical research works, they just see the (BS) headlines.(I don’t have the know how to understand medical research etc. Just know a bit about parts of the process as a guinea pig.)
