@lisamelton
I often miss a really great post because the timeline is strictly chronological.That is, I don't see it the first time around.
Then I *do* see it because one of the people I follow boosts it. The system works.
@negative12dollarbill @lisamelton unsolicited advice: have you tried https://phanpy.social/ ? Its a different interface for your mastodon server and it has a very nice alternative feed you might appreciate.
I am not associated, just discovered it myself in the last week. fyi. Ignore if irrelevant

.Opening the door for AI bullshit is not even the worst part of this idea.
Folks, all of us here ARE the algorithm. Personal curation is a feature, not a bug.
We make Mastodon awesome by following people and boosting what we find meaningful, significant or just cool. That's how it works.
Let's keep making friends. Let's keep sharing. Let's keep Mastodon alive. Together.

@lisamelton
One of the (many) reasons I left twitter (both times) was because it was becoming harder and harder to set it to a chronological feed. I like my doomscrolling to be IN ORDER. -
@lisamelton I'm a pretty firm advocate for no AI use at our office. My simple line? "You are better than the AI." True here, too.
My boss wrote all our stories in Claude. They were (and still are) unreadable. I took over writing all the newer stories. I don't mind using the random code generator for small things, but sweeping architecture agent coding just looks like we're creating a massive pile of technical debt on a new project.
If whoever wants to write some slop-lm to filter the fedi firehouse, meh .. everyone can do what they want. I'll keep mine chronological. It's more fun that way. -

@lisamelton They should of course be free to program a server that offers an algorithmic feed if they want to. But keep that shit out of my server, i trust the fully human algorithm more!

@lisamelton
Social media is vulnerable. It used to be run by various advertising and marketing specialists. Now AI has joined the fray. There is a battle being waged for people’s minds, for their opinions. Manipulation is everywhere.
I long to go back to the old internet – cosy, old-fashioned, warm. But it’s gone, and it won’t be coming back.
The fact that you refuse to use a particular tool makes you vulnerable to those who have no qualms about using it. -

@lisamelton people can be so clueless yet so confident at the same time. Truly amusing.
'jackhole techbro'? I rather be respectful to the tech people as a community than call them with demeaning names. I mean if things are so bad for me than I sure can go back to my good old letter posting. Has no algorithm, does not come from 'techbro', does not need algorithm, no ai, employees my local postman, etc. And yeah, "making friends".
Everything is fine till it fits the propoganda, is it?

The stuff read like it was written by a forgetful corpse. There was no . . . connection for me. I sniffed it out and asked them to please stop, to write things from scratch on their own.

Well if he's nostalgic of algorithm he can stay on the commercial social networks. There is no need to replicate that shit here. -

Later, I learned that Salvador Dali supported, I think Franco. But the quote is classic.

I had drinks with a old co-worker a few weeks back who was (and still is) a web marketing manager. He told me he writes some reports with the LLM and he’s pretty sure his director asks to summaries all the reports she gets with LLMs…
I rarely uses the Weighted Random Word generators outside of code and I would NEVER use them to craft a message to someone or a blog post. The thing about writing is that it’s the way we organize thoughts. you are organizing what you want to communicate. The moment you outsource that to matrix/transformer/attention multiplication, you’ve lost the ability to arrange what you’re thinking and putting it into order.
That’s such a essential part of written language, something that we’ve only had for a few hundred years! Literacy rates were at 2%~5% for much of the ancient world until like … what… 1500? 1600?
These days I can’t even read generated shit. It might not even be auto-generated. Some people may just write that way now because they use GiPPTY /Claude so much that it’s just how they think now. It drives me bonks.

@lisamelton I follow @hypebot which boosts me trending toots into my otherwise chronological timeline. That helps me to see stuff outside of my curated bubble.
The important part is, that this is MY decision and no one forces anything on me.

@Atoro Exactly! You are controlling what goes into your timeline. As it should be.

@Atoro @lisamelton @hypebot ... but can it only do this by violating the 'trust' of the users who don't want their posts used for such things?
I should be clear that I am /not/ one of those users, but I know they exist.

@lisamelton and a "popular things algorithm" would not solve the actual issue of missing posts from not particularly popular accounts who nonetheless post super interesting stuff, especially if they are not in your timezone.
For that, the best solution I found is RSS. If there's someone whose posts I don't want to miss, I just add their RSS feed to my reader, then I'm sure to see them even if I only log in ten hours later and nobody boosts it. Being in control like that is nice.

@gimulnautti @lisamelton I know its swimming upstream around here, but this smacks of privilege.
Whether its contacts or tech knowledge, not everyone can find what they want for their feed so easily. *most* of the people I've invited to Mastodon have bounced off because they can't find anyone to follow easily and there's no algorithm to feed them starter accounts.
We all need to not harass people for wanting something that makes their lives easier.

@lisamelton@mastodon.social What about an opt-in algorithmic feed similar to the one on Bluesky?
