Yeah, there's no official interface for it. I think it's just because the developers have limited resources and other things have been higher priorities.
(In a way though it's good that this encourages people to use third party apps.)

@FediTips @pluvialgeist There is an official and documented API interface. Just the frontend doesn’t make it accessible.
