It needs to be activated by admins too. Basically, the instance needs to connect to an Elasticsearch instance

That’s useful, thank you! Why is it safer to have full-text search disabled?Not everyone wants their posts to be easily discovered. By default only hashtags are searchable, so this gives people more control over what terms people can discover their posts by.

Not necessarily? AFAIK your posts will be full text searchable on other instances if you activate this, even if your own instance doesn't have elasticsearch.
