‘New data centres? No thanks’
A new logo for the Danish campaign against data centres. Lovely work by @snittegodskontoret - a lovely, clever counterpart to the ‘Nuclear Power? No Thanks’ logo. (Also a Danish design)
Den Smilende Sol - Den Sure Sky
The Smiling Sun - The Cross Cloud
The angry, real cloud. The water. The electricity. Nice layers to it.

@bjo 'Atomkraft' is Danish for 'nuclear power'

@CiaraNi thanks, just wondering as it's the same as in Germany and I thought the "Atomkraft nein danke" stickers are a German thing.

@bjo A young woman in Aarhus designed it in the early 1970s. Part of the genius of her design was precisely that it travelled so well - it worked easily in multiple languages.

@MaSiKa69 @CiaraNi @snittegodskontoret The alternative is no new data centers. We have enough for basic and critical stuff already. The data center build-out is about "Gen AI", and serves no purpose for humans what so ever.
@stjerneskov @CiaraNi @snittegodskontoret Partly agree. The general growth of the internet also needs his place and gen-ai has useful usecases. Also a lot of rubbish for fun and social media.

@MaSiKa69 Generative AI is unethical and built on stolen data. The oligarchs profiting from it fund a US government that is disappearing people into camps. Environmentally, we might as well drive around the neighbourhood in fossil-fuel cars throwing leaking AA batteries into compost bins as use generative AI and draw on data centres. I have yet to hear of a use case that is so critical for humanity that we should pay that high price.

@CiaraNi @snittegodskontoret The genius of the original "Atomkraft? Nej tak" sign was that it didn't picture nuclear power as something bad, it showed a smiling, antropomorphic sun, "natural energy". This negates or softens the verbal message and invites people to join the cause in good mood. Even the text is modified oppositional, as it uses the polite 'nej tak', "no thank you".
The Datacenter is similar only on the linguistic level, as the smile has been replaced by an angry face, rainclouds, rain and thunder.
From a pure communication efficiency perspective, the data center logo is perhaps stronger because image and text reinforce each other more clearly, and borrows meaning from referencing the original.
But I wouldn't call it "lovely" in the same humane sense as the friendly anti-nuclear logo.
