    Perhaps one of the reasons I'm not into LLMs is because I am not really convinced that what we need in the world is more stuff done faster.

    I'd like to see a "slow the fuck down" movement and a "does this really need to be done?" movement.

    Do corporations *really* need to be moving ever faster, generating more stuff, growing endlessly like cancers?

    Maybe I'm just old and tired, but I'd like to have just... less of everything.

    Except cat pictures, of course. Keep 'em coming.

      @jzb LLM's isn't that big of an issue I think. On demand shipping is. Its been around for 30 years and is one of the main reasons for the worlds total collaps during say Covid, Straight of Hormuz situation etc. Its fundational assumption is that small customers are not as big of an issue socially or economically for a reason so when things go wrong, the small customers pay the price through waiting - and its just recently that we've figured out that just that, for them, is a disaster for economy

        @jzb I mean its not LLM vs ODS or anything, both can be crap ofc.

        I'm just amazed by the shocked faces of economists who are surprised a national economy can suddenly backpedal when all thats really happening is crap like "Dave's car can't be repaired", "Mika's house modifications will take four years extra" because they see people as companies, isolated and contained.

            @jzb Must have hypergrowth.

            The rich got leverage to eliminate. They already took those bonds up to 2060, and need to make 1000% returns.

            It’s all debt. All of it. Debt, upon debt, upon debt.

              Definately think the 'does this need to be done' movement would be a good thing. Everyone might actually get the 3 day week that was talked about decades ago!!

                        @jzb @sidawson I use them not so much to get things done *faster* but more to get things done *at all*. As coding assistants, they are far better than any human I ever met.

                                  @jzb the slow food movement from decades ago predicted this mess, countered - and pretty sure they all had cats

                                      @jzb
                                      I feel the same.

                                      Yet if the competition ships features faster, attracts customers and gets more revenue, leading to revenue problems at one's employer, eventually having to let people go; I can see why it seems prudent to to also increase velocity.

                                      The positive and negative effects of increased velocity come at different time scales, so one might have to accept a bad future in order to have one at all?

                                          @matt Some things do need to be done faster (or, you know, be done at all...), sure.

                                          I'm guessing you know I wasn't thinking of that use case when I wrote the previous post. You might respond, "That's the problem" which, you know, would be fair.

                                          But my point was really about the corporate use of LLMs with this fuzzy idea that the real key is shipping more stuff faster. The real problem, typically, is bad leadership, bad product decisions, saturated markets, and not having a product that meets the customer holy trinity (solves an urgent problem that the customer is willing to pay money to solve).

                                          I've said before: since LLMs exist and they're *right there* I don't at all "blame" blind people or other folks with similar needs for using them to solve accessibility problems. Not one tiny bit.

                                          But... I'm not going to stop criticizing the overall harms I'm seeing from them, either. If we can somehow address the problems and keep the benefits for the a11y use case, I'd be delighted.

                                          And to make this an even longer response (sorry), I had problems with the corporate treadmill of going ever faster even before LLMs entered the picture. They just happen to be a reaction to and accelerant of the problem.
