This morning, four brave supporters of Just Stop Oil were sentenced to a total of 90 months in prison for an action that never even happened. Daniel, Indigo, Margaret, and Ella were arrested last summer for an attempted action at Manchester Airport and have been held in prison on remand since.
Their trial was overseen by Judge McAdam who stated he was 'neutral' on the topic of climate breakdown and that he 'didn't have time' to read scientific reports on it. Hardly a fair trial when the defendant's actions are guided by climate science. The case came to a close today with the judge delivering custodial sentences to all defendants. 30 months in prison for Indigo Rumbelow, 24 months for Daniel Knorr, and 18 months for both Ella Ward and Margaret Reid along with £2,000 costs for each of them--totalling £8,000 in costs.
They've all spent 294 days in prison on remand since being arrested last summer. They've been removed from their lives, their families, lost their jobs and are facing ongoing legal bills--all for thinking about acting out of love, acting in the face of climate collapse. Now they need our support.
