@thomrstrom I have yet to see any accessibility tool that requires several towns worth of mega data centers.
There is ML that can run locally, or at reasonable scale that is perfectly acceptable in my admittedly, very firm world view.
None of these things are the massive surveillance state being built, disguised by generative AI.
@thomrstrom @nuintari I have already seen a lot of accessibility washing to justify the existence of technology such as the meta creep glasses and generative ai because it can help some blind people have a description of the world around them. Nope. Not buying it.

Unfortunately pretty much everything you do on a pc or smart phone runs through a Data Center or at least a server farm (most are in DCs) This post ran through one. So did yours. Hard to get around it without a major change in society. Tech companies created the problem, we bought it. We can pressure Big Tech to incorporate digital sustainability, i.e. enough is enough (yeah, right)

@nuintari As someone who uses AI tools as a productivity crutch (with the excuse of a debilitating degenerative joint disease caused in part by decades of typing); I feel conflicted every day. I do think we're going to look back at this era though as somewhere between the Dada movement in Art, and the MCSE movement of ~2000 where people listened to radio commercials thinking they could get a high-paying job as a sysadmin just by taking some overpriced course.
It'll be interesting, nonetheless.

It is absolutely mind boggling that this can be even legal for what's happening right now.
Even the new gas plants planned for the gigantic hypothetical data centers shadow the most intense industry relying on fossil electricity. It is absolutely unbelievable that this even gets approved by governments.

I am against AI data centers. I am against mega data centers. The data centers we need to maintain the Internet and established, useful technologies draws a tiny fraction of the resources AI data centers consume.
I'm not against technology, I'm against AI. We don't need AI. AI is a net negative technologically, socially, economically, and environmentally.
