I realise that my original toot might not have made it clear that I was talking about a hypothetical future situation.
My point is that the US government can cut payment systems and internet services to individuals and organisations simply by executing an executive order declaring those persons and/or organisations as terrorists.
As they have already done to Francesca Albanese.
So they can do the same for any of us if they wish.

I feel like we’re largely in agreement, but we’re getting tied up by language. I’m not sure how to fix that, except to try to clarify. -

We cannot cut our ties, our tech/financial dependencies with the US.Here in Europe we do NOT have the alternatives to allow us survive what would be a massive self-inflicted denial of service.
The US, on the other hand CAN cut our ties to them with considerable consequences to all of us in Europe.
I am not suggesting that we cut these ties rather that Europe sets up alternatives to allow us to function should those plugs be pulled by others.

Have you seen what the "normies" in the US are like? Many are ok with the ongoing civil war in Minnesota, the total grifter paedophile President, the corrupt supreme court, and open fascism.
Cutting off contact with them in online spaces and making small islands of calm where people can share without worrying about the place turning into a Nazi bar is a good thing.
It's like how there is no excuse for using x/twitter. Governments certainly have their own web sites, and they can have anyone who wants to receive government announcements sign up to receive them.
"But we have to be on x/Facebook/Instagram/TikTok" is bullshit pushed by people too lazy to think outside the box. Which is part for the course with governments.

You don't print cash any more? You don't have banks where you can pay your utility bills? You don't have chequing accounts any more?
We had all these things as a normal part of life, and we can return to them when necessary.
Canada has the Interac online banking system, independent of any American ownership.
So alternatives are possible.
Trump complains that IS banks aren't allowed to operate in Canada, which is a lie. There are at least 11 IS banks operating in Canada. It's just hard to qualify for a license, unlike US banks, which go bankrupt on a weekly basis.
There are more US bank failures so far this year than in Canada in the last 100 years. Tougher regulations.
During the great depression, over 9000 US banks failed. None in Canada.
So we don't NEED the US.

So do it on a country by country bas. Or better yet, think smaller - community by community. Small is beautiful. And dirt cheap to run. About the same cost as a pizza every two weeks.
Plenty of people self-finance their hobby sites out of pocket, no ads, no patreon, no tip jar. Why not this?
Just paid my hosting bill (yes it's gone up) $156/year. 4 domain registrations is another $100/year. Way less than an extra large pizza and fries every month.
If a couple dozen people aren't willing to collectively chip in $1/month each to do something they're supposed to be passionate about, they're not THAT passionate.

Plenty of hosting companies well packaged with cpanel, a web administration interface with scripts to install all sorts of software, so you don't need to know how to self host, as you put it, " for Fuck sake.'
Blogs, bulletin boards, email accounts, content management systems, etc. It's all there.
You can also hire someone to help. There's plenty of people willing to help on an hourly rate.
"But it should be freeee!!!" Hope - people gotta eat. It's only fair.
