Guess I won't be asking that person for help or advice on anything anymore. Enshittification happens in people's writing skills too, I guess.
I also have absolutely no idea how to respond to them. If you're that far down the genAI black hole I don't think pointing out the ethical/environmental/cognitive issues will help. Fuck.
@sundogplanets I suspect a colleague does the same to me. Do they not think that we could just do that ourselves if that’s what we wanted?

@sundogplanets Like other knowledge, social norms propagate across human networks unevenly over time. You already experienced the wave of spreading AI risk awareness. You can defend yourself from risk or, your call, be a carrier.

@sundogplanets It always sucks when trust is lost from someone that held it with respect previously. Sorry that person failed to respect you and broke that trust.

@jcurioso @elduvelle @iris "they"/"them" can be used as singular non-gendered pronouns. (There was a time they were almost exclusively used as plural pronouns, but now they can be either.)
P.S. Mastodon thinks your post is written in Dutch, it seems

@diazona
Apparently 'they' for an unknown individual has been in use for a long time. Like we have examples from the 1300s in middle English through to the late 1700s when someone decided the generic pronoun should be 'he'. -

@sundogplanets fuck! What a kick in the guts. Trusted to untrusted in one interaction. I feel your pain – I dread asking for feedback these days in case it ends up being The Reveal

@iamnmm @sundogplanets Last time I talked to this specific person, he said that his job was "being a meat terminal for Claude". He said this with apparent *pride*.
I have avoided him since.
@datarama @iamnmm @sundogplanets
Have you seen _Mrs Davis_? It came out like nine months after chat gpt and it has people "channeling" for the AI.
It was so, so good.

@sundogplanets AI is perfect for those who want to be, or pretend to be, so much more than what they are. Its not necessarily a slight.
There is only so much time in a day, if we, through lack of oversight, or through intent, stretch ourselves.
AI is currently being marketed as the anti void that can fill those gaps.
Not sure what this means for the real connection between us humans though.

@sundogplanets @bsdphk I had a similar problem, a lawyer that was helping me do an important task casually sent me an update which went : „hey the free version of chatgpt had issues reading your handwriting to translate the document, I asked a colleague to try their paid one but still had issues, can you please send me an MS word version?“
My answer was the one two of this thread comments combined: „I don’t appreciate that my very personal data are now shared with openAI and a random colleague of yours, I was expecting much better understanding for this matter from a lawyer. I would ask you if you want to continue to never do this again without my permission and just translate documents manually“
They fired me as a customer, but we are both happier now

@Jeffrey @sundogplanets @ravenbait we are using institutional email adresses and have our own email servers usually for work.
@frincon @sundogplanets @ravenbait Sure, I use my own domain too. Some of the external addressees for my correspondence have a gmail address. If you correspond with them then the text of your email, all the to and fro responses between you with times and dates - and those of any other people on the distribution list (maybe from other highly secure institutional servers) are owned by Google.

@raymaccarthy @RegGuy @ravenbait @sundogplanets Was the original manuscript written in Word? Google Docs? sent via e-mail on a Microsoft or Google platform? Do any of these companies, even if they trumpet FERPA compliance, restrict what they feed their AI?
I really don't think you can hope for anonymity and a scrape-free experience in 2026 unless you're using LibreOffice on a system unplugged from the net.
But no. Fuck this "colleague."
@eryops @raymaccarthy @RegGuy @sundogplanets Yes, fuck 'em. There's a difference between someone you thought you could trust gaily handing your stuff to a thief, and a pickpocket filching your wallet while you're having a conversation on the street.

@sundogplanets We are seriously doomed as a species… I feel like this war has already been lost.

I really appreciate all the great advice and suggestions. I'm just... so disappointed and know I have to approach all my interactions with this person differently in the future. I've written up a long email, but I'm realizing that won't work as well as having a conversation with the person. Especially because I'm likely to start crying during the conversation. So. That's going to be FUN.
But maybe it will help one person be less addicted to the forest-burning plagiarism machine? Maybe?
@sundogplanets Why have a conversation? I'd look them dead in the eyes and pry off the Control key and the V key off their keyboard, and then empty 16oz of full sugar Coca-Cola onto it, never breaking eye contact.

@sundogplanets Wow ! There are a lot of comments ! And I have not seen one pointing at the site I stumble upon few weeks ago which helped me in the same situation :
https://dontpastetheai.com/The colleague I had to face was one I could have been friend with so I chose the agressive version. Maybe I broke something between us from his point of view but since then he did not share his AI answers again.

@sundogplanets Perhaps send them a mushroom quiche, picked and prepared following a slopbot recipe, by way of thanks?

"I sent it to you because I wanted _your_ comments and advice on this. If you don't have the time to read it, please just say so. Being foisted off onto a reply generator like that is just hurtful."
@skjeggtroll @sundogplanets 'hurtful' just gets dismissed, I'd be honest and replace 'hurtful' with 'stupid' because at least that has a chance of festering in their brain a little.

@sundogplanets it's like trying to convince a sports fan to cheer for their opposing team. Not a rational discussion.
I'd probably take the approach of, "Thanks for the feedback, but I wasn't looking for something I could do (ask an LLM, email a different person, etc.). I was asking you. I was looking for the weight of your specific knowledge. Your specific experience. If you don't have time to offer that, just tell me you don't have time."
