1. Debian Developer resigns from the project in response to the recent vote to allow generative AI use within Debian.2.

@grahamperrin @cyberquixote Wowza, are you really still not aware in this day and age how much of a total asshole move it is to correct people's spelling and grammar in ephemeral social media posts and judge their competence based on it?
I mean, really now, get a life.
You get one chance to unreservedly apologize here. Anything else will result in an immediate block.
Sheesh.@jik @grahamperrin @cyberquixote
Surely that was sarcasm? I hope it was...Edit: I recall that, based on other posts the person apparently is a slopper, might be underage based on the content.

@benjamineskola @jik who determines which is which. Just seems like it would be hard to enforce at best and miss used at worse. For a project that already has limited resources do we hire an #AI code watcher?
@MeaningfulBits @benjamineskola @jik If there was a somewhat widespread practice of kidnapping physically less-fit developers, chaining them in basements and making them do programming for you, there would likely be at least some projects denouncing this practice and prohibiting from doing that when contributing.
Would you go and say "but you cannot go to all countries in the world and actually check every single individual!"?
(yes, this is a thought exercise to lead somewhere)

@KittenKoder hey, if you're coming after me as an AI bro then you've misunderstood the situation, and if you're not, then you might want to be more precise in your language in the future
@jik I've spotted that same person trying to pick ridiculous fights in threads on 3 completely different topics in the space of a week. I suspect they're not being entirely genuine here

@richlv not exactly sarcasm.
A hint. Where I used these two hashtags –
– I'm not truly a member of any police force.
I was not truly upset by the grammar or punctuation.
I was obliquely challenging the person who, it seems, gained popularity by describing the entire Debian community as "fascist fucktards".

@jik they are a reddit mod after all... @grahamperrin

@petko true. Genuinely, thanks for taking a few seconds to think beyond the obvious.
If you have not already guessed: my style of moderation (in Reddit) very strongly discourages people from using language such as "fascist fucktards" to describe an entire community.
So, I might keep an eye on these two lists:

@msbellows @jik Someone said "Everyone for AI is too for it, and everyone against AI is too against it" and that nails it. Ideologues are noisy at both ends of the spectrum.
This is not really a disagreement over ideology, it is a disagreement over ontology. A disagreement over the nature of reality. Either you believe that the output of an LLM should be treated as if it came from a mind (wrong and delusional) or you do not (correct and reality-based).
-
@marcusxms If you feel compelled to respond with a point by point commentary like this then I really think you missed my point.

@mogul @msbellows @jik "If only those pesky folks with ethics and educated positions would just shut up." Fuck off, Bret.

@AlexsandraSmart @msbellows @jik I'm not doubting that. But I'm also seeing people opposed to AI apply use and/or tolerance of AI as purity tests for projects, people, and purpose, and rejecting any association with anyone who fails their test because of the people off the deep end you're talking about.
@mogul @AlexsandraSmart @msbellows @jik this is easier to understand substituting AI for blood diamonds or something similar. This is not only about application (far more complex by itself than the purity thing, including security issues, future maintenance, brain damage...), but about data center impact, community damage, environmental damage (from carbon footprint to rare elements to local community harm), technooligarchy support, (main) use in military and surveillance, and contribution to likely the next big economical crash.

@mogul @AlexsandraSmart @msbellows @jik wow, the analogy with blood diamonds so much understates the problem.

@jik Odd that everyone has jumped on the AI aspect of this when what I could see was a problem with civil discussions and debate in open source communities without resorting to personal insults and unprofessional behaviour (and even then, someone initially could be upset/frustrated, write something and then apologise later potentially if it’s not part of a pattern of behaviour).
