The good news: #Portugal votes for Center-left Seguro as president with an overwhelmingly clear 66.82% majority.
-
Voted for him in national territory:
1.687.106Voted for him outside our country:
42.265Small number of people, don't really make much difference.
However if you look at the percentage it gets scary. Those 42.265 votes are actually 51,88% of the international vote. That's potentially 1.752.298 voters, but good thing abstention in international voting reaches 95.26%.

@bit @jwildeboer thank you, just goes to show not to believe everything you read!

@teclista @mhz @jwildeboer we french people have experience with the right wing of the left, and I think that the portuguese are in for an interesting ride if they think this guy will apply a left-leaning program...
@Notme @teclista @mhz @jwildeboer
The president in Portugal has no executive or legislative power. Luís Montenegro, the current prime minister, is a lot more right wing than Seguro.

The good news: #Portugal votes for Center-left Seguro as president with an overwhelmingly clear 66.82% majority. Far-right candidate Ventura is the clear loser. Thank you, wonderful people of Portugal!
@jwildeboer my country does not be like this . The mayor won by the money they bound to people but that's okay we admit this and keep going haha
-
@Notme What makes you think portuguese people do not know what they are voting? @mhz @jwildeboer
@teclista @mhz @jwildeboer We french people didn't seem to know the first time either, but since it looks more like macron vs lepen, then they probably know what they are getting into, indeed.

@ammdias @teclista @mhz @jwildeboer thats interesting, thanks for the information.
edit: seguro appeared as quite extreme already, do you have examples of how the current pm is worse?

@jwildeboer
Glad to hear this!
The bad news, in France, is that the 66% who don't want the far right can't get their egomaniacal politicians to work together to stop them. -
@jwildeboer if I am french, is that guy center left or right wing ?
@mhz @jwildeboer he's very center left, more to the center, than left, but still within the limits of it.
He was the leader of the Socialist Party for a few years.

@Notme The President of the Republic doesn't have any executive or legislative power, it's not like the French President.

@Notme if there's something Seguro is not, is extremist... Unless you can consider extremely not extreme, an extreme.

@jwildeboer Still 1/3rd vote for this fascist. Same guy that says we need 3 more Salazares. These people voting for him must celebrate the 25th of April just to go to the beach.
@bit still this being a Presidential election, doesn't mean all these voters will transfer to him on legislative elections. Many voted for the fascist just because they didn't wanted a centre left candidate.
-
@Catarina @jwildeboer I voted for him more enthusiastically than I was expecting. Despite being a centrist, he still is a progressive and I am hoping he will set up clear guardrails with regards to what the political discussion should be about and how democratic political parties should seek an understanding on some of the pressing issues. Not super optimistic about that last one, but one can always hope. Seems like an upgrade with regards to his predecessor, at least.
@ubik I wouldn't call him a progressive...
-
@flying_saucers @jwildeboer I was positively surprised by the first round. I always expected the initial favourite Gouveia e Melo to tank once the campaign started, but I thought media favourite Marques Mendes would get to the second round easily, since he had been preparing the public narrative for 10 years now. Ventura was always going to lose the 2nd round. He has a dedicated cult around him that always show up, but has a massive rejection rate in the rest of the population.
@jmcs Media is already preparing their candidate for the next Presidential election by hiring the former Liberal Party leader as a commenter, replacing Marques Mendes.
Still this was a win worthy of celebration. Seguro really symbolizes the result he got by getting the united votes of those who love Democracy.

@DiogoConstantino @jwildeboer
While I think there isn't ever a reason to vote for fascism, I hope you're right, the more diluted his support gets the better. -

@jwildeboer @DiogoConstantino what specific aspect of his program, or what specific policy of his would you say is "centrist" but not exactly left wing ?

-
@jwildeboer @DiogoConstantino what specific aspect of his program, or what specific policy of his would you say is "centrist" but not exactly left wing ?
@mhz he doesn't have a program. The office of the Presidency of the Republic, doesn't have executive or legislative power.
Seguro has been in politics for many decades, he's very well known for most of us. He was the leader of the Socialist Party, which is centre left, and he has always been on the centrist wing, always proposing less progressive proposals, always more accepting of the centre right proposals.
Still, he's known for his strong personal integrity, but being soft.
-
@jwildeboer but still 1/3 support the budding fascist

@Catarina @jwildeboer I think I read somewhere that 30% of voting populations everywhere prefer the "strong guy, just tell us what to do" option anyway, which is usually the fascist one.

@jwildeboer also thanks you to donald trump to have put his weight behind the far right guy, making sure nobody vote for him.
