What would I do if I didn't have to sit from 9-5 in my home office?

Sustainable, solar-powered neighborhood-level data centers built on trash compute (or other commodity hardware).
Local backups, photo hosting, shared DVD + Blu-ray libraries, excess power generation, neighborhood calendars of events + signup not hosted by Eventbrite, forums, encrypted chat. The possibilities are endless, and I would love to do this and help wrest control of our communities from the billionaires

@stroz why? Why aren't we all doing that?
(do I ask while at my 9-6 home office)

@corpsmoderne I'm experimenting at the household level, at least. Tons of trash compute, now with the start of solar backing it up
Plan is to make this more sustainable and repeatable for myself with further infrastructure as code and documentation while writing about it in as much detail as I can
It's a complete mess currently, but pulling some order out of the chaos is a goal, even if I get 2-3 hours a week to work on it

@stroz yes! I was day dreaming about this recently too: https://arewehaving.fun/with-finger/2026-05-20-finger/

@stroz all those good ideas need to be done together with someone. To much to do by yourself.
Maybe someone in your neighborhood is looking for exactly that, and can offer to cook dinner and a nice place to tinker?I got into alot of what your mentioning so clear, through other people, and that was the secret. Not technology alone, but people together. And an open collective to run a little, but scalable, economy for expenditures. We meet once a month. Always the 13. th. link: ukrudt.net
