    If you accidentally share sensitive info in a post, delete the post as soon as possible.

    Do NOT just edit, because editing leaves the sensitive info visible in previous versions of the edited post. (Previous versions are visible on edited posts to prevent "bait and switch" abuse tactics from editing.)

    If you want to keep most of the post intact when you delete it, select the "Delete & Re-Draft" option. This deletes the post but puts a copy of it into the post creation box.

    @FediTips However, it will still be visible in the RSS feed if anyone downloaded it before deletion. At least it seemed to work that way when I tested.

      @3rik

      That's true, but would happen only if the post was made with the "Public" visibility setting. If people use a different visibility it won't appear in the RSS feed, and they can also set a different visibility as their default (more info at https://fedi.tips/who-can-see-my-posts-in-mastodon-how-do-i-send-dms-in-mastodon).

        @FediTips Saying "Do NOT edit it" with CAPS makes it sound like doing that creates an irrevocably bad situation. But you can still delete the original after editing it, right? Editing it just doesn't do what you wanted.

        If I'm right about this, what you mean to say is that "editing the message won't have the desired effect of removing the sensitive info".

          @theohonohan

          I'm mainly phrasing it like that so people don't accidentally leave sensitive info exposed 🙂

          You're right that edits are possible in the future, but I want to make sure people are aware that editing doesn't hide previous versions.

              @FediTips Or just highlight, copy the post, delete and then paste it back anew, edit and repost.

                "If you accidentally share sensitive info in a post, delete it as soon as possible."

                The "it" in that sentence refers to the entire post, not just the sensitive information.

                  Really good question! Yes, the media you post is visible in the prior versions even if you edit the post to remove the media.

                    Yup, definitely a good option. That's what the "delete and redraft" option does if it is present on your app or interface.

                          You can check by clicking on the "edited" label to see the previous versions. The edit was minor, I was making clear that you need to delete the entire post to hide the sensitive info.
