Apparently, volunteering is also seen as actual work and requires a visa now. Fair enough. But then I will not risk that a border officer decides attending a scientific conference or meeting with a researcher at an American university is work, requires a visa, and is a sufficiently good reason to handcuff and detain me. Not going.

For the record: Personally, I am convinced that attending a conference and a research visit *are* actual work.

@AndrzejWasowski er used to be able to get a WB stamp. I always said that I was going for work when attending conferences. But maybe that differs from volunteering. I’m also not going. But here’s the website re: WB. https://www.uscis.gov/working-in-the-united-states/temporary-visitors-for-business/wb-temporary-business-visitor-under-visa-waiver-program

@AndrzejWasowski for me, the primary reason to not go to the US is not safety but principle. I will not support a fascist regime by normalizing it. And I would be normalizing it if I continued to come for teaching and research purposes, as I have done for years.
The lack of safety simply confirms that my decision was the right one.
