@FediTips This is a bit of a lot of UX friction. Not even a hint how the thing works for new users.

It used to be more DM-like in terminology and interface (it used to be called Direct and had an envelope icon), but people complained that the fact that mentioned accounts could see a post meant it wasn't really a DM so the devs changed it to be presented as just another visibility setting.
I guess solution would be to have a totally separate DM system which works totally differently, but that would take resources away from working on other features. It's a tricky balance.

p.s. The "Mentions" visibility that DMs use means that any account mentioned will see the post.
If you want to discuss someone else's account in DMs, you should not mention its account address because it will show that post to that account.
If you absolutely have to discuss someone else's address in DMs, you might want to break the address by replacing its @ symbols with the word AT for example.

@FediTips ... i'm surprised (mastodon v4.4.3+glitch) doesn't have a warning for "hey you mentioned multiple users in a DM. are you absolutely sure you meant to do that

Group chats in DMs are quite common so there might be a danger of frequent false positives causing people to ignore the warning completely or want it switched off.
I guess there could be a warning if an account is added after the chat has already started, but I don't know how easy it is to code?
