Hey fediverse !
I love how you can put a lifespan on your posts on mastodon - I think this should be a mandatory feature everywhere.
I am curious about whether this "temporality of data" has a name and if there are articles about it.
I don't think the data storage performed by e.g. YouTube is sustainable at all and I am curious about how we can make the fediverse "sustainable".
How do we decide the lifespan of different posts / videos / livestreams ?
Please share your thoughts

@snue there is the term "Right to be forgotten" or RTBF in law and it originally relates to a person's information on the internet. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right_to_be_forgotten

@grob That is a nice perspective, but I am looking for something a bit different.
Maybe something like "the duty to delete" ?To expand on my original post:
I think we need to see data as a limited ressource.
I don't think it is sustainable to store every piece of media ever made for ever. I also think some media should be stored for longer than others:1/2

@grob For example "low-effort relevant-now" media should be deleted faster than in depth videos discussing stuff that is relevant for longer. Both should be able to exist though.
The decision of what to delete and how fast is necessarily subjective (I think).
I am curious about how this can / should be done and if it is even necessary (I believe so)

I've listened to the first episode of the trilogy. Wow, they are good at making podcasts !
They mostly talk about library socialism (duh), but the fictional story they intertwine in the podcast tackles the question of whether to store everything ever created

I'm looking forward to the next two episodes - thanks a lot for the recommendation
