The Degraded Search Engine
-
@Zelda @davidrevoy That’s the big problem for me - it’s a full time job tracking down who ultimately owns anything of these services. And as soon as I find one that seems to be okay, someone else buys it.
I think the user @Linux is the person who published this list, and that was their goal, trying to find businesses that were truly not owned by Americans. That has to be a daunting task, and I appreciate that someone went through the trouble.

@hacknorris @wikipedia I agree
Btw, I wonder what parody name (and metaphor) in a fantasy setting I could give to Wikipedia... I'm open to ideas!@davidrevoy

@simondev Nice. Thanks for the link. I had the classic DDG with AI turned off (+ublock origin and a AI blocklist), I'll check if this variant is better.
@davidrevoy @simondev Oh! If you haven't already, you should add uBlacklist. If you have an AI blocklist, uBlock Origin will stop you from being able to click the links, but uBlacklist will stop them from showing up in the search results at all.

@davidrevoy Ahh, no plm. They indeed do lookalike lol
My fault for not looking at alt-text and posting too quick.
@darkpixel @davidrevoy it's also a pun that I love : there's Pepper & Carrot, and then there's Cepper... and parrot.

@echedellelr Nice! I already had the HUGE one, good to see new sources, thanks for sharing!

@davidrevoy @simondev Also, mind if I ask what AI blocklist/s you're subscribed to? The one I found on the first page of DDG... is in need of updating, let's say

WWTPD - What Would Terry Pratchett do?
@hacknorris @wikipedia@rotherstuebs @hacknorris @wikipedia Exactly, that's a question I often ask myself while writing my scenarios. The GOAT.

@davidrevoy Patiently waiting for part 2 where it is revealed that There is another book on the absolute top that machine
With a plausible answer but with Parrot on the book. (Basically Googles AI-Summary that gets shoved down your throat with EVERY search. )
She tries the spell suggested and it explodes in her face.
Also not to forget that half of the real results will be slop-seo-ridden articles
(Yes I very much hate search engines by now)
Also gotta love the fact the machine is literally running on goo
Now thats some impressive Water-Cooling.@stefan Haha, thank you for the ideas and yep: epic water cooling

@davidrevoy
Well they tuned it that it was unusable long before they started experimenting with AI on Google.comLet's be honest, bad search results came from honest enshitifing impulses that drove the business into the direction completely by itself.
Why offer the best results for free if the content providers can be forced to pay for the best slots via AdWords?
It's organic.
Google doesn't need ads to ruin its search.
@yacc143 I agree! I remember exactly during a coding sprint with the Krita team back in 2018 having this discussion around the table and each one sharing what they used because it started to be impossible to just find quickly issues, debug info, things in various documentation, etc...
But the AI era really made everything go faster downhill. I'm convinced by that.

@davidrevoy Does the machine create the books? o: That's pretty rad! Or maybe they magically poof the books off the shelves. Even if the books themselves are trash.
It's time to reintroduce yourself to Dewey Decimal, my dear!
(Also I'm loving all the search engine recommendations in the comments, hehe.)
@ToonLink hey! In my first sketch, I designed big arms on the top of the machine (to pick books around) but it felt complex and also it had something a bit agressive or dangerous.
I then decided it was a sort of teleportation thing, yep. That's one advantage of having a setup in a magic university

Or something with grimoire, Grimopedia? Wikimoire?

@davidrevoy Sure, the irony is, that today I have to use a mix of a high quality deep research (yes LLM based) assistant (fine tuned, it starts with: all claims must come with double checked references, to guard against hallucinations, ...), Qwant, and for some stuff when the size of the index matters still old Google (manually, by agent to pick out the truffles in the pigsty, or custom scripted filters to find what I look for.)
Yes, it's an adverse environment.

@jordan @davidrevoy word of mouth will always be the best publicity. I also like feed agreggators like bubbles.town and powrss.com . But those are more for discovery than search/research.@sunbeam_rider @davidrevoy @jordan FYI Bubbles is coded by AI: https://bubbles.town/faq#:~:text=claude
