Every one of these new "achievements" looks plausible and like Lucy with the football, people I trust keep telling me it actually works and surely this time it's real. And then like clockwork, 3-6 months later, it turns out that the efficacy of this new technique is somewhere between "break even" and "fraud".

@glyph if it makes you feel better: my *pessimistic* expectations are that even if we get set back *decades* and have to rebuild our software stacks from scratch, we can at least use it as a chance to *actually* take lessons we've learned and do that without the baggage of "but it would be so much work and we don't have to."

@glyph all of this while every professional has to worry about being laid off due to the machines "replacing them" or "making others more efficient".
The reality is that everyone is drowning in slop while formerly (somewhat) stable infrastructure is historically unstable due to the maintaining companies going all-in on AI.

@glyph Scammers have all the power, it is an economy of theft and grift and for the people who are affected by this are looking and understanding the Luddite movement that little bit more.

When skeptics say it "doesn't work", that's imprecise, not really correct. Nevertheless, this is what we're talking about. It's impossible to tell at the time, it all *looks* like it's doing something, and if you were show me something tomorrow I'd probably believe it again. It just keeps *turning out* after massive efforts to investigate or verify its work, that all its big "capabilities" are just plagiarism, fraud, or both
@glyph I don't think it "doesn't work". It clearly does things that can be useful in specific circumstances, and that can appear useful in a much broader set of circumstances. But it's also eroding our capacity to maintain our own systems (software, broader tech, and social). And one of the ways it does "work" is moving control from users to a handful of unaccountable corporations run by questionable people...

@glyph I don't think it "doesn't work". It clearly does things that can be useful in specific circumstances, and that can appear useful in a much broader set of circumstances. But it's also eroding our capacity to maintain our own systems (software, broader tech, and social). And one of the ways it does "work" is moving control from users to a handful of unaccountable corporations run by questionable people...

@glyph The big problem is that they work often enough to be useful, but not often enough to be trusted.
So you can use them to find a pile of vulnerabilities. Some of them might be real and important, some might be fake or just not all that important.
For an attacker, that's great. You can just iterate through until you find one vulnerability that works and exploit it.
For a defender, much less simple. You have to triage them, fix them, ensure the fixes don't themselves introduce new vulnerabilities, etc.
And yeah, this is one of the big frustrations with the whole field. It "works". Often enough to be useful, for some tasks. But what tasks? How do you know when it didn't work?
