@benpate I'm wondering what the advantage of e2ee private messages on Mastodon is when we have Signal, Matrix and other robust encrypted messaging tools that you could invite a friend to if you want to have a private conversation.
Is anyone worried about this creating moderation issues?
Generally I'm in favor of privacy and security, but I'm just not sure what the value of this feature is on Mastodon. Maybe you or others can provide your perspective on this.
I don’t have all the answers, but I believe there’s a network effect at work.
Signal is fantastic. I use it for lots of things. But it’s “yet another” place to go.
But the Fediverse is my primary place to talk with people (like you)
If you and I could have a truly private follow-on discussion without switching networks, it would be a win for the Fediverse.

#Mastodon just got funding to add end to end encryption into their software.
So, some time next year, you’ll be able to send truly private messages to the vast majority of the #Fediverse
Im so excited about this.
Because it’s an open spec, this opens the doors for every Fediverse app to join the party.
Yesterday, this project was a proof of concept. Today, Mastodon has turned it into a stampede.

@benpate That's good, French gov will not be able to spy on us.

@benpate I love when government agencies do what they’re supposed to do!!

@manul70 Yup! Though I'm less concerned with nation states. Nation-states are considered an "Advanced Persistent Threat" - and if they want into your devices, then god help you. Relevant xkcd: https://xkcd.com/538/
But, this will be great for thwarting the next tier down: web scrapers, nosy admins, and corporate spies.
Anyone building #E2EE is a win for the Fediverse...
MASTODON building e2ee is a HUGE win for the Fediverse.

@RetroHax I'm not familiar with Peak, but yeah, there are a ton of encrypted messengers out there. I'm also on Signal and Matrix, each for different purposes.
The good news about this is that it brings this feature to the network we're already using. No change in behavior.. one day, your messages just become a little more private.

@benpate XD I meant it more so as a Word of Describing STuff and not the Video Game

Like using Peak as another Word for saying "Cool Feature" or so

Well that explains why my google searches looked so weird.

@benpate that's great news!

@benpate Specs?
The primary spec for ActivityPub is here: https://swicg.github.io/activitypub-e2ee/mls
I have a project overview here: https://emissary.dev/e2ee <- this also includes links to the MLS protocol and other implementation resources.
My overview page WAS up to date, but I haven't posted much recently. But I *swear* I'm still making progress.
I'll show off a little of my work at #FediForum - and I'm sure we'll have larger conversations there about #E2EE in general.

@benpate MLS, OK. Fair enough.

@jens Yeah, the MLS protocol is pretty solid. It's built/supported by a number of big industry groups who know what they're doing.
And, I'm not writing the encryption myself. I'm building on top of the *fabulous* ts-mls library by Luka Jacobowitz. He's been super-supportive and even helped me troubleshoot a few things.
I'm pretty sure Bonfire is using OpenMLS, which is equally awesome.
When Mastodon starts working in 2027, a lot of the groundwork will have been laid already.
