“PIRATING” IS A CAPITALIST FRAME

@blogdiva Seriously. How dare creators expect to be paid for their work?
@farbel so parasite like Jeff Bezos is a creator now?

“PIRATING” IS A CAPITALIST FRAME
don’t be a cop.
If buying isn't ownership then p̶i̶r̶a̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ SHARING isn't stealing
If buying doesn't create ownership, then p̶i̶r̶a̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ SHARING doesn't destroy it.
SHARING is anticapitalist and antifa because sharing is caring.
@blogdiva I believe that knowledge should be free and open. At the same time, I also believe that authors and creators should be compensated for their work.
I pirate not because of moral high ground, but because everything is so gosh darn expensive now.
Which is why I find it crazy that that billion dollar companies ~~pirate knowledge~~ train their models and sell their services for profit

@blogdiva that's true, but also if I wanted to demonize sharing, I wouldn't give it a super badass name like "pirating" so that's capitalism's fault to make us look cool.

@blogdiva i wholeheartedly agree with you, but also I've always wanted to be a pirate and SHARING is probably my best chance to get anywhere close to that.

@blogdiva@mastodon.social this is funny and cute but I’m ngl it’s probably the weakest argument for pirating I’ve seen lmao.

@blogdiva@mastodon.social the moment you make a statement like “if buying isn’t ownership…” you are implying that there is a world where piracy could be wrong or immoral. digital assets can be freely duplicated therefore they can’t be stolen, don’t give any concessions

@farbel i’d rather pay them directly than give wonky Luthor a cut.
am not against making money. am against having to get a pittance so that a fucking fascist piece of shit can have another yatch to traffic children.
seriously, we don't need fucking capitalists make money out of our fucking labor, but it is much, much harder nowadays after the fucking bailouts.
techbros killed p2p because they are the new bankster middlemen. so either we reinvent p2p or guillotine them.
it’s come to that.

@blogdiva By the way, Amazon now lets authors remove DRM from their books. I have done so, so if you buy mine, you can share it with anyone you like. Also, the "pittance" I get from Amazon is a hell of a lot more than I would get from a typical publisher.

@etsyy @blogdiva I don't know that I'd call it the weakest.
Your argument focuses on the ethics implied by the argument. While there's a discussion to be had about the ethics of copying digital goods, "If Buying isn't ownership" isn't an ethics argument. It's a contractual one - "If you don't hold up your end of the argument, we don't need to hold up ours".

@blogdiva When it involves a black flag dancing overheat, salting your beef with flying lead, strip you clean and sink you low to take your grog with Davy Joe... *then* you can call it Piracy.
Until then, I'll be calling it, "unsanctioned copying."

@Epic_Null@infosec.exchange @blogdiva@mastodon.social I understand, and I’m saying if there’s no material harm in us not upholding our end (that being non-piracy) then we shouldn’t be expected to regardless of if they hold up theirs or not.
I’m saying the contract was invalid to begin with

-
@kauer@aus.social @blogdiva@mastodon.social somebody bought it to then have it pirated
@kauer@aus.social @blogdiva@mastodon.social I’m not advocating for nobody to purchase digital assets or pay the creators, simply that there isn’t a world where the piracy of those assets is wrong
-
@kauer @etsyy @blogdiva The creator doesn't get their reward now when people don't cheaply copy it, because middlemen squeeze them for everything, so I don't think that is particularly the problem.
There are a wide variety of jobs that the cost of them is going to zero while the benefit they provide to society is incredibly high but hard to measure. This isn't unique to artists.
It gets even worse when you consider the zipf distribution the rewards typically follow.
