Do you want your public posts to be searchable on here? If so, you need to do at least one of these things:
- Opt into "full text search" so that your public posts can be searched by all the words in them. More info at https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-opt-into-or-out-of-full-text-search-on-mastodon
- Use hashtags in your public posts so that people can find them in hashtag searches. More info at https://fedi.tips/what-are-hashtags-how-do-i-use-them-on-mastodon-and-the-fediverse
Doing both gives your public posts maximum visibility.
Doing neither means your public posts aren't searchable at all.

@FediTips You could maybe specify that people should use *relevant* hashtags, as hashtag spam is a problem.

I've made the hashtag guide a bit clearer that irrelevant hashtags are spam and may lead to being blocked.

Also numbering them make it clear doing 1/ + 2/ listed points (currently you only have dashes which are easy to miss as required list)

I'm using dashes to distinguish it from instructions where you have to do every step.
So, you can do either one dash or the other or both or neither, there isn't a sequence to work through

@FediTips If i opt into "full text search", will my posts be searchable only within Mastodon, or will they also be searchable via external search engines like Google or Bing?

The full text search option only affects Mastodon searches.
However, if you post something with a public visibility setting, that means it is visible to anyone who browses your profile. There's nothing technically stopping outsiders from scraping public posts into search engines or wherever.
If you want to keep a post safe from search engines etc, the best option is to use followers-only or mentions-only for its visibility. More info at https://fedi.tips/who-can-see-my-posts-in-mastodon-how-do-i-send-dms-in-mastodon/
