BTW it failed because of insufficient storage capacity, which led me to reacquaint myself with the fact that storage management in iOS fucking SUUUUCKS!!

That's absolutely on purpose, of course. They don't want you to keep control of your device or be frugal with your storage - they want you to run out as fast as possible so they can sell you more iCloud.
I hope to still be alive when we come out on the other side of this tech hell we've allowed to form around us.
