This is called the #pumpfoil. She is #pumpfoiling
You pump up and down with your legs and that motion alone is all that is necessary to translate via a hydrofoil under the water surface (like a wing) to give you lift and forward motion
You need good balance, endurance, and if you stop pumping you lose lift and sink rapidly

@benroyce@mastodon.social @edgeofeurope@mastodon.social This is Alina Kornelli. A well known athlete:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alina_Kornelli
The dress is a german Dirndl. A traditional Bavarian outfit. Often worn at Oktoberfest in Munich. Or even while pumpfoiling, if it happens to be Oktoberfest season.I thought the dress added a lot of extras, I love that she's wearing a dress! Completely unexpected and fun 🩵

Plus; fuck it: if we want to wear a dress, we wear a dress. Nothing wrong with wearing a dress

That's why I posted the video. If it was just someone pumpfoiling that's cool but doing it in a dress is such a great over-the-top flex

indicators of movement and airflow
showing off that she’s stayed dry
season and place
That’s a lot to fit into a short wordless video

My friend had kids. They grew up to also learn "boarding".
They've taken it to unbelievable heights.
4 ft X 8 ft board. Couches with 1. 2. 3 people sitting on it. Or using 6 ft. Ladder.
None of this stuff is fastened to the board... so learned experience is what it takes.

I think it could be done with a specially designed hydrofoil that is very large and very light. Expensive material. It would have to be a special kind of pumpfoil designed for open water starts
Or an electric assist. Or a paddle you have to carry with you slung over your shoulder or else. If you lose it: you're stuck
And with all these caveats, it would still only be possible for very athletic people

Very nice!
I went down the youtube rabbit hole and found this short video that shows one of her early tries (she sinks) and then shows how much better she is four years later

@benroyce @JohnJBurnsIII from watching people launch from a run, I’d say it looks impossible to launch while swimming. But I never searched for counter-proof.

Only if she does this instead?
