You don't have to, and you don't have to be quoted, it's all optional

Many people find quoting useful beacuse it means people can see the post you're talking about without having to click through, and you can quote stuff without having to use your own character limit on copying what it says.

What are you using to access Mastodon?

The feature is totally new, so many of the apps don't have it yet. However they should introduce it soon.

The web interface has it right now, as the web interface generally gets new features first. If you want to try it out you can log into your server's website at https://mastodon.world

Ahh, Metatext hasn't been updated in several years I'm afraid.

You might want to switch to another app anyway, for example Ice Cubes, Mona or Ivory? These are all being maintained and updated.

Also you might want to follow @Feditext which is a community attempt to restart development on Metatext

@FediTips I didn’t like that my quoted tweet and the post that used it, didn’t show up in my mentions. It felt dishonest. Not sure if that was a glitch or a feature but it was distasteful. “Here let me use & comment on your post but leave you out of the conversation.”

What are you using to post to Mastodon?

There should be an option that lets you choose if a post can be quoted or not quoted.

Quoted posts are only supposed to show if this option has been used to give permission to quote.

Also, if you are quoted it should show up in your notifications.

Ahhh wait a minute... I just saw that your server hasn't updated to the current version of Mastodon that allows quoting.

However, it might have a general setting that allows other people to quote you, which was a temporary stop-gap when the developers first started testing quoting.

If the setting is there, it would be under ️ Preferences > Other > Who can quote, you can switch it off by setting it to "just me" and then saving changes.
