@dilmandila Same thoughts here... But most people also claim that they need Microsoft Word because you can't get anything done with LibreOffice. Or that they actually need Photoshop instead of Gimp. Hell, let them vibecode what they feel like. At least it's open source and it might dispell some of the magic of pricey closed software. Personally I always believed that software should be free and with AI there's much less incentive to steal code anyway...
@dr_laemmerbein @dilmandila GIMP is not an appropriate replacement for Photoshop unless your use case for Photoshop is just experimentation. That's what GIMP was made as, that's why GIMP makes no effort to accommodate artists.

@kyle_pegasus I guess it depends on what you use it for. I'm using darktable and Gimp for photography and I'm perfectly happy with the feature set.

@dilmandila Oh yes, I was also rolling my eyes very strongly when I first heard about this. Didn't consider the training aspect, but of course the open source codes are right there for everyone to steal...
@ditsch42 @dilmandila Claude is also trained on all Adobe code as well. Remember that an LLM can "read" object code just as easily as source code.
Object code isn't so easy for humans to read, but that's really just an incidental side effect of making the code easy for CPUs to read. An LLM doesn't care either way.

This is depressing. Perfectly good alternatives to all Adobe have existed for many years and are used at pro level, but someone hallucinates some code with claude (which I hear was trained on code of programs like gimp and inkscape) and suddenly everyone is raving about it being the end of Adobe, though the thing they praise is at best entry level stuff. But like other snake oil sellers, they claim it will get there, though their "in one month" is now "many months" #artcraft #foss
@dilmandila i learned about the existence of Glama.ai today and the thing i gravitated most around is the "maintenance" rating:
Maintenance health based on commit activity, issue responsiveness, release frequency, and community profile.
"A" = actively maintained. "F" = abandoned or archived.
search for anything you want related to something on the internet (suggested searches: google, minecraft, bluesky and finally mastodon). what do you see? a bunch of abandoned shit. this metric isn't just "had an update recently", this is "does anyone who worked on this give a shit?" and the answer is no. no one gives a shit about things they already made and maintaining something a random plagiarism generator made is the absolute worst experience you can have in programming so no one is doing it.
this is from a group of people who have apparently smart agents that can "just do things" for them without needing involvement, like keeping an app up to date. literally the value proposition of this application of LLMs - the boring stuff no one wants to do.
even if they did do that extremely well, why would you waste tokens on something you're done with? why do anything to a fragile codebase that does everything you need?
and finally, look at the duplication ("google" search is good for this). assuming earnest effort, it's "just" massive duplication and solo development that can't be collaborated on. assuming malicious intent, some of those projects must be credential stealers.
and the slop machine operators are proud of all of this.

@isaackuo @ditsch42 @dilmandila
So this will pit the "everything AI" side against the "you can use it but never own it/pay us for use forever" side. Hmmmmm. I think I like where this is going.

@Dealiah @ditsch42 @dilmandila Yeah, the "let them fight" aspect is fun to think about.
But still ... I feel like they've likely already got some sort of "Copyrights for me but not for thee" backroom deals worked out, designed to screw us over all around.

@Wifiwits @dilmandila can you link some?
@naught101 @Wifiwits @dilmandila
I would be interested in those reviews, too! -
This is depressing.
@dilmandila I find it ironic, that the company who introduced AI features in their program, experience..just for a second...the same thread artist did.

@dilmandila Why do they need to make a replacement program? Can't they just ask the clod to do the thing directly?

@mansr Perhaps due to copyright issues. Apparently you can copy a likeness or features or something like that but not the actual code.

@dilmandila I mean, instead of telling the bot "write a program that edits the photo," why not simply tell it "edit the photo"?

I don’t imagine using these, but I’m happy with a scenario where Microsoft’s desire to maintain its dominance in the office-suite market and its desire to sell everyone bullshit generators provide directly contradictory incentives.

it would only be a good thing if it was the end of adobe, sadly this will not be the case.

@dilmandila yeah.
There was no reason to use #Adobe before #AIslop and there were certainly sufficient alternatives already existing before someone farted out #SlopCode!

@dilmandila There's not a good FOSS alternative to InDesign either. There's Affinity, which is 'free', but owned by Canva, so not really. And no Linux version. Sure, there's LaTex and its cousins, but good luck getting the designers to work with that. I don't even really want to work with that. Back in the day, I used FrameMaker for everything, but Adobe has ruined that too.
-
@dilmandila @Gargron I love Gimp! Because of it, I don't even know how to work on Photoshop. But, TBF, I'm not a pro user.
@diraquel @dilmandila @Gargron@mastodon.social I learned about a project called PhotoGIMP a while back and I love it even more than I already did plain GIMP. I've never even used Photoshop, but it configures GIMP in a way I guess to look and act more like Photoshop and its so pretty and nice to use, especially after tweaking some settings and theming it.

@mansr I think they were trying to appeal to artists who don't like prompts. Their selling point is something like "use AI with total control over the process" or something like that. They say you can run claude inside these apps so perhaps the prompts is optional to those who want it, but those who don't can still work them without prompts, though claude does things in the background. Not really sure if I got all that right but from the few YT reviews I saw that seemed to be the case.

I know right? I've been using Inkscape for ages. Adobe basically doesn't exist as far as I'm concerned.

@argv_minus_one @dilmandila
I haven't touched an adobe product since just before it switch to subscription. I've been able to do EVERYTHING I used to do with adobe and more, using entirely free software. -

@dilmandila One bright side is that Adobe might be forced to actually lower their prices now that all their customers think that free versions are a dime a dozen.
